Net Tools
« on: February 05, 2008, 07:07:49 AM »
http://users.pandora.be/ahmadi/nettools.htm

I came across this sucker when I was googling for snippets of code for VB. Kinda makes me want to give up on my own project. I've never seen so many tools in one program before. Almost seems overkill, but the way it's laid out looks pretty solid. Oh, and it's freeware.

Er...I'd avoid this software. Something's not right about it. This exists at the bottom of that page: Warning - THIS SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED FOR EDUCATIONAL USE ONLY! IF YOU ENGAGE IN ANY ILLEGAL ACTIVITY THE AUTHOR DOES NOT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT.

However, one of the screen shots (the middle one) shows a tool that says 'Mass Visit Website'. So it basically allows you to do DoS attacks? That's illegal right there.

Well yeah it includes some pretty questionable stuff. If you choose to use them, that is. Though it is recommended by quite a few sites.

So are alot of network utilities.  It all depends on your intent on using it.  Alot of pen tests rely on such tools and have legitament reasons for use.  Remember 'SATAN' (Systems Analysts Tool for Analyzing Networks - At least I think that's what it means).  That was the 'devils' program since it basicly allowed for a blackhatter to do pretty much what he wanted to a network.  But it was originally developed for research and developement for network security.

Besides when has brushing on the other side of the law when it comes to computers and software ever stopped us
before?

EDIT:  maybe you should stay away, unless this is a false positive just due to the nature of the programs used, I got a Virus Warning on a file that was installed.

"ProgramFiles\Net Tools\LANTalkerServer.exe
Trojan horse BackDoor.Generic8.TYM"

Now from the look of that filename, it is probably considered a virus by the scanner because of what it does.  If anyone can scan this with another scanner and post your results, that would be informative.

Upon further inspection (and throwing caution to the wind) I ran it and it actually is a VERY useful tool.  I can't count how many situations where this tool can save alot of work.

What the hell...I'm willing to throw caution to the wind and try it out. Though most the apps I see here I have a version of from someone else. In any case, I'd dl it now as programs such as these tend to "disappear" overnight. You know what I'm talking bout

**Oh and it's not actually a virus. Just most virus protection programs like AVG and such will flag this kind of stuff.

I figured as much after actually seeing what the program was.

Avast didn't detect any virus when i installed it.

Again, it is listed on many download sites such as softpedia and download.com ... As far as I know, they don't list things that are virus prone.

Yeah I can see how they could categorize LAN Talk as a trojan. It's creating a unauthorized connection between 2 systems.

This thing has an ungodly amount of apps...most which you have to be careful not to use for the wrong way

Other than that, a nice collection of apps which can be very useful. The Advance System Info is a very very powerful and useful program. Now if only they had a reverse email lookup program and or WhoIs built in...that would be helpful

Ill give it a try, the douchnozzles at Symantec listed angrys IP scanner as a "Hack tool" and every time I plug my USB drive into a system running norton/symantec antivirus it gets deleted.  Looks promising, but it may just be a cobbled together script kiddie utility.
