Title: Net Tools
Post by: Agent4054 on February 05, 2008, 07:07:49 AM
http://users.pandora.be/ahmadi/nettools.htm

I came across this sucker when I was googling for snippets of code for VB. Kinda makes me want to give up on my own project. I've never seen so many tools in one program before. Almost seems overkill, but the way it's laid out looks pretty solid. Oh, and it's freeware.

Er...I'd avoid this software. Something's not right about it. This exists at the bottom of that page: Warning - THIS SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED FOR EDUCATIONAL USE ONLY! IF YOU ENGAGE IN ANY ILLEGAL ACTIVITY THE AUTHOR DOES NOT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT.

However, one of the screen shots (the middle one) shows a tool that says 'Mass Visit Website'. So it basically allows you to do DoS attacks? That's illegal right there.

Well yeah it includes some pretty questionable stuff. If you choose to use them, that is. Though it is recommended by quite a few sites.

So are alot of network utilities.  It all depends on your intent on using it.  Alot of pen tests rely on such tools and have legitament reasons for use.  Remember 'SATAN' (Systems Analysts Tool for Analyzing Networks - At least I think that's what it means).  That was the 'devils' program since it basicly allowed for a blackhatter to do pretty much what he wanted to a network.  But it was originally developed for research and developement for network security.

Besides when has brushing on the other side of the law when it comes to computers and software ever stopped us
before?

EDIT:  maybe you should stay away, unless this is a false positive just due to the nature of the programs used, I got a Virus Warning on a file that was installed.

"ProgramFiles\Net Tools\LANTalkerServer.exe
Trojan horse BackDoor.Generic8.TYM"

Now from the look of that filename, it is probably considered a virus by the scanner because of what it does.  If anyone can scan this with another scanner and post your results, that would be informative.

Upon further inspection (and throwing caution to the wind) I ran it and it actually is a VERY useful tool.  I can't count how many situations where this tool can save alot of work.

What the hell...I'm willing to throw caution to the wind and try it out. Though most the apps I see here I have a version of from someone else. In any case, I'd dl it now as programs such as these tend to "disappear" overnight. You know what I'm talking bout

**Oh and it's not actually a virus. Just most virus protection programs like AVG and such will flag this kind of stuff.

I figured as much after actually seeing what the program was.

Avast didn't detect any virus when i installed it.

Again, it is listed on many download sites such as softpedia and download.com ... As far as I know, they don't list things that are virus prone.

Yeah I can see how they could categorize LAN Talk as a trojan. It's creating a unauthorized connection between 2 systems.

This thing has an ungodly amount of apps...most which you have to be careful not to use for the wrong way

Other than that, a nice collection of apps which can be very useful. The Advance System Info is a very very powerful and useful program. Now if only they had a reverse email lookup program and or WhoIs built in...that would be helpful

Ill give it a try, the douchnozzles at Symantec listed angrys IP scanner as a "Hack tool" and every time I plug my USB drive into a system running norton/symantec antivirus it gets deleted.  Looks promising, but it may just be a cobbled together script kiddie utility.

LOL...yeah yeah I know. Is it possible to create a batch file that would go out and get your outside ip. Cause that would be golden if you could. You wouldnt even have to visit a website....just dbl click and you have it

I coded a scrappy internal/external ip finder in vb last week... and was trying to look for more vb netcode to expand upon for it. All it did was grab an http request from the automation script at whatismyip.com :P

.. but I was looking to add on to it for maybe distribution at a larger lan event of ours. Maybe for people who don't know wtf they're doing. Click renew, click find... blah blah blah... In a user friendly interface. Not sure. Still trying to figure out some practicality for noobs.

ahh IC,..thats what I was thinking too just with some quick brainstorming.. A http request would be the fastest way I could think of of doing it. I have no VB (program) but maybe I'll have to get a 30 day or something and do it since I have nothing really going on today

You using 6 or .net

When I tried to run that, my sysinfo crashed.....

Just have it get the ip from your cable modem instead of getting it from a web page, but essentially, it still is.

.NET

This is what the last working build of it looked like, but I've recently changed it up a bit to allow expansion of options:

I figured having FITES plastered on it was a nice touch.. advertising!

One question though....why would anyone at the lans need the public IP?  Isn't that more infor than they need.  Although, they can find it out if they tried, but still....

Well, it was just a test than anything... as I said, I'm trying to figure what would be the most practical tool for a noob to use that would help them the most at one of our lans... a lightweight tool if possible. And I like the thought of our name being right on the tool

Nice work...I haven't touched .NET though I'm told it's 10x better than 6 (especially when it comes to the versatility of .Net vs 6)

I haven't touched VB at all before last week, so I only have about 15 hours of experience learning VB so far. Considering that, I thought I did fairly well.

I saw something like this awhile back that utilized wget inside a batch file to grab your external IP from whatismyip.com and display it from batch file.

I used to use a batch script that I would have a shortcut to at the top of all my users' Start Menu's that showed them their IP (internal, the external wouldn't be important), their PC name, their MAC address, their OS version, uptime, their NT UserID, and which domain controller authenticated them.It was really handy and really simple so I could tell them to click on Start and then "Who Am I?" and I had all that info without walking them through 10 steps to get their IP. Then a policy changed and regular users were no longer allowed access to the command line and all batch files had to be converted to VBS. I've never quite figured out an equivalent in VBScript. I've been able to come up with partial replacements, but never quite what I was looking for.

Funny you should say that because I came across a batch file that did the exact same thing about a year ago. I had it then when windows took a dump on me (it always does like every 6 months cause I can't leave well enough alone and have to mod the hell out of my GUI to be unique) I lost it. I never found it again since. It wasn't from a forum or anything, just a web dir which had a ton of different apps. I stay awake sometimes wondering where it went
