To be honest, i got the same joy from playing Duke Nukem 3d when i played through Prey.  If you have doubt about how much influence 3drealms had for Prey, see the wiki article on 3drealms:  'The final game released by 3D Realms was Prey, a game released on July 11, 2006 after being stuck in development hell for eleven years. Prey was originally developed internally by 3D Realms, but after several years of delays, the company paid Humanhead Studios to develop the game."

From the very beginning and through the end, Prey just "felt" like Duke Nukem 3d.  You could play games on the video game machines within Prey, you could activate stuff like the faucets.  There were big boss battles.  The creatures were all very unique and interesting.  There was tons of humor through-out.  I loved how you would find a random radio playing excepts of a 'coast to coast: late nights with Art Bell" where people would call-in to the show talking about things that have been happening in the game.  I loved those little touches.

So, personally, I really don't need a DNF when i felt that i got my fill with Prey.

At this point, who give a f#%k?  It's been delayed since I had my 300mhz machine.....and quite frankly, it's NEVER coming out.

AHEM!

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6209901.html?tag=latestheadlines;title;1

"Despite rumors and statements to the contrary, 3D Realms (3DR) has not closed and is not closing," reads the statement. "3DR retains ownership of the Duke Nukem franchise. Due to lack of funding, however, we are saddened to confirm that we let the Duke Nukem Forever (DNF) development team go on May 6, while we regroup as a company. While 3DR is a much smaller studio now, we will continue to operate as a company and continue to license and co-create games based upon the Duke Nukem franchise."

"Take-Two made a last-minute proposal to acquire the Duke Nukem franchise and the 3DR development team. Take-Two’s proposal was unacceptable to 3DR for many reasons, including no upfront money, no guaranteed minimum payment, and no guarantee to complete the DNF game. From 3DR’s perspective, we viewed Take-Two as trying to acquire the Duke Nukem franchise in a 'fire sale.' Those negotiations fell through on May 4, a deal never materialized, and the DNF team was sadly released a few days later."

Due out next year. By Gearbox. I liked Borderlands, but it was too Diablo-ish. Got kind of boring kind of quick. On the other hand, since they're devoting a team to an actual story that's been established with an iconic character at the helm.... can't wait. That's all.

Looks like boarder lands... does not look like Duke at all... I mean WTF!? There were NO iconic enemies... We were given no sound from the game.. And if you do a Google image search for Duke Nukem you will find that MOST of the fighting happens in city areas not in a wide open wasteland... But I guess that's all gearbox knows... I was not impressed.

They let people play the demo at PAX.  If Duke Nukem forever beats HL2:EP3 to market I think Valve really should close down.

Valve doesn't need to work on EP3 right now, dontcha know? With that Black Mesa mod nearing completion, they can hold off on actually working on their flagship title as they know their rabid fans will be effectively sedated for a year with this crazy project finally being finished.

I saw those screenshots on the ign site, but it looked like it was mostly from a single sequence, there were plenty of other screenshots from inside buildings, out in the middle of various cities, etc.  I truly hope they don't create a Duke Nukem Dirt edition :)

As I said a year ago (yay for thread necromancy), i got my Duke Nukem fill from playing Prey a while back... so if this flops big time, then i'm cool with that.

Interesting article talking about what happened last year and why they think it's actually going to be released this time.  Also some nice tidbits about it potentially being "in the right hands."
