Battlefield Heroes
« on: February 08, 2008, 07:33:32 AM »
www.battlefield-heroes.com

Anyone else looking forward to this title? There's a review of it in Computer Gaming Monthly for this issue which I subscribe to but haven't gotten to read it yet. It's a FREE download and is by the makers of BF42 and BF2!!! It'll be cartoonish like Team Fortress 2 so I think that will be an excellent change. It'll also be set in WWII (at least I'm pretty sure it is judging by the only screenshot I see from CGM's cover). This game could turn out to be the next big thing in the Battlefield series!

If it has the feel of TF2 it will be golden. I love the auto trash talk. The characters actually seem to have a personality.

Doing a little reading on that site in the comments it looks like it will be 3rd person. I'm expecting that 1st person will be worked into the final product at some point since this will be for computer gaming. If it stays 3rd person only I might not be so interested. The style seems to be perfect for this type of game though. This could truly bring back the Battlefield franchise as I believe BF42 was the best in the series. There will be no squad or commander but that will probably change with demand as well. Hopefully squads will be added but please keep the commander out! I never liked that addition as it can completely ruin the element of surprise. There's nothing like sneaking past enemy lines and heading towards a back flag only to have the commander see you before you reach your goal. I'm wondering mostly about the vehicles though. This could be something significant in terms of gameplay and is really what set the Battlefield franchise apart from all of the other shooters. Smaller maps are also supposed to be the focus which is nice when there's not a lot of players on a server but the comments indicated there will be 128 player support. If there's that many players on a server I would hope for a larger map like El Alamein or Gazala! There also is supposed to be ways for players to make "smaller" transactions to customize their character with uniforms and weapons. Weapon wise I hope it will be more cosmetic and keep the players balanced. I'll keep this thread updated as I learn more. I'll be reading the article in CGM this weekend sometime (hopefully) so I'll post more details when I can.

I think it looks cool.  I read that they were accused of copying TF2 and they said that they had aleady had their style set in place by the time TF2 was released.  I won't be surprised if the likeness of TF2 is only on the surface and it's totally different gameplay-wise.

Cel-shaded type gamestyles were around before TF2. I don't think they were the first. Zelda used cel-shading years ago for Wind Waker.

JetSet radio was one of the first I believe to use cell shading.

At first glance it reminds me of that game for the N64 "Army Men."

Hopefully it'll be much, much better.

I'm a fan of downloading demos and ebtas and crap to try stuff out, so having it as a free download can't hurt it... but usually "free" = "turns into crap." I guess I'll have to wait and hope for the best.

Well, it's not entirely free. It will be ad-supported like a lot of games in Korea are. This way more people can play the game while it still generates revenue.

I don't think TF2 is cell-shaded?  It's cartoony but using a different method.

Well, I said cel-shaded TYPE. I realize it's not quite the same but the style basically is.

Anyways, I just got done reading the preview of it in CGM. Here's some of the main highlights:

  • Customization will be HUGE! The article mentions using in-game cash (which is earned just by playing) to buy things such as eye patches, badges, hats, boots, helmets, googles, belts, gloves, heads, faces, necks, chests, hands, waists, legs, and feet as well as more to come! Different weapons and probably abilities will be able to be purchased with real money.
  • Wing-walking will be brought back and planes will be slower. Also, every character will have the ability to damage planes in the air (hopefully this won't unbalance the game too much basically killing the ability to do any damage in a plane before bailing).
  • First-person perspective is not out of the question. Senior producer Ben Cousins mentions in the article that if the demand is there they will work on it. So, this will probably be implemented at some point.
  • Spawning will be about 5 seconds but you won't be able to choose where you want to spawn. Instead, you will be taken to where the most action is (could be good and bad but may make for some interesting tactics for strategies).
  • There will be three character classes that have a number of abilities you can select from. You also won't be able to change your class mid-game. The classes will basically be among the lines of light, medium, and heavy.
  • Vehicles will spawn much more quickl. You will also be able to do a spray-on image that is customizable on the vehicle itself
  • Gunners (heavy) will have the ability to throw back grenades (frickin' sweet!). Another ability will be a 10 second rechargeable ability that lets you see nearby enemies through walls (here come the wall-hack cheat screamers, hehe). There will also be something called a bomb 'bouquet'. Basically, it's 15 grenades at once!
  • Cousins said that pretty much ANYTHING could be implemented into this game, even horses if there's a demand. The team is looking at many different types of games for ideas so this game may not only be cool to play from the start (public Beta in the summer) but could also have tons of new downloadable content making it last longer than ever!
  • Last, but not least, some projected minimum requirements: 1GHz CPU, 512MB RAM, 64MB video card, and 500MB HD space.

ENJOY!

Googles? Damn, they're everywhere!  ;D
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!
