Title: Battlefield Heroes
Post by: llDayo on February 08, 2008, 07:33:32 AM
www.battlefield-heroes.com (http://www.battlefield-heroes.com)

Anyone else looking forward to this title? There's a review of it in Computer Gaming Monthly for this issue which I subscribe to but haven't gotten to read it yet. It's a FREE download and is by the makers of BF42 and BF2!!! It'll be cartoonish like Team Fortress 2 so I think that will be an excellent change. It'll also be set in WWII (at least I'm pretty sure it is judging by the only screenshot I see from CGM's cover). This game could turn out to be the next big thing in the Battlefield series!

If it has the feel of TF2 it will be golden. I love the auto trash talk. The characters actually seem to have a personality.

Doing a little reading on that site in the comments it looks like it will be 3rd person. I'm expecting that 1st person will be worked into the final product at some point since this will be for computer gaming. If it stays 3rd person only I might not be so interested. The style seems to be perfect for this type of game though. This could truly bring back the Battlefield franchise as I believe BF42 was the best in the series. There will be no squad or commander but that will probably change with demand as well. Hopefully squads will be added but please keep the commander out! I never liked that addition as it can completely ruin the element of surprise. There's nothing like sneaking past enemy lines and heading towards a back flag only to have the commander see you before you reach your goal. I'm wondering mostly about the vehicles though. This could be something significant in terms of gameplay and is really what set the Battlefield franchise apart from all of the other shooters. Smaller maps are also supposed to be the focus which is nice when there's not a lot of players on a server but the comments indicated there will be 128 player support. If there's that many players on a server I would hope for a larger map like El Alamein or Gazala! There also is supposed to be ways for players to make "smaller" transactions to customize their character with uniforms and weapons. Weapon wise I hope it will be more cosmetic and keep the players balanced. I'll keep this thread updated as I learn more. I'll be reading the article in CGM this weekend sometime (hopefully) so I'll post more details when I can.

I think it looks cool.  I read that they were accused of copying TF2 and they said that they had aleady had their style set in place by the time TF2 was released.  I won't be surprised if the likeness of TF2 is only on the surface and it's totally different gameplay-wise.

Cel-shaded type gamestyles were around before TF2. I don't think they were the first. Zelda used cel-shading years ago for Wind Waker.

JetSet radio was one of the first I believe to use cell shading.

At first glance it reminds me of that game for the N64 "Army Men."

Hopefully it'll be much, much better.

I'm a fan of downloading demos and ebtas and crap to try stuff out, so having it as a free download can't hurt it... but usually "free" = "turns into crap." I guess I'll have to wait and hope for the best.

Well, it's not entirely free. It will be ad-supported like a lot of games in Korea are. This way more people can play the game while it still generates revenue.

I don't think TF2 is cell-shaded?  It's cartoony but using a different method.

Well, I said cel-shaded TYPE. I realize it's not quite the same but the style basically is.

Anyways, I just got done reading the preview of it in CGM. Here's some of the main highlights:

ENJOY!

Well, there wasn't much information from the article about how the weapons will be able to be customized. I don't think not being able to change your class, though, is a big issue since you'll be able to carry numerous weapons which will make you viable in some way in almost any situation. Hopefully, more details will be available soon!

As they said before though, they'll put in whatever is in high demand, so if a buncha people are like I WANNA CHANGE CLASS NOW! then they'll probably put it in eventually.

That's true! But I'm willing to give it a chance once the beta comes out before I complain.

Another thing I forgot to mention earlier is the elimination of going 'prone' (lying down). In the previous Battlefield games, going prone would allow you to shoot with a lot of accuracy because of little kickback of the guns. The problem was people would do what's called 'dolphin diving'. Basically, they would jump forward and hit prone while shooting. This would give them very accurate shooting while making it tough to hit. They would then jump back up and do it again. Getting rid of prone is going to eliminate this issue. The designers will probably make kneeling and standing up a little more accurate to make up for this.

Hey, I never said I wan't going to play it.  The class thing is no biggie since you get alot of weapons in your class.

I think I just got excited with the image somewhat of a TF2 Heavy carrying a large quantity ridiculously large guns and wandering into combat...

What my .50 cal is out of bullets? Time for the dual p90s...
