Free (as in beer) 250GB of Online Storage
« on: April 27, 2008, 07:01:26 PM »
FileDropper is a new service, similar to sites like RapidShare or MegaUpload, that offers a convenient way to share large files with your friends and family. They are billing it as the simplest file sharing website ever. Member files are never deleted, it has incredibly fast upload and download speed, and there are no count down timers, unlike many other file sharing sites out there.

So what's the big deal, you say? From now until May 15th, they are offering free premium accounts to any "Digger, blogger, Redditter, StumbleUpon user, Del.icio.us user" etc. I signed up for my account as I am a Digg user, but it never had me verify in any way that I am one of the above mentioned users. After signing into my account for the first time it shows that I am paid up until January 18th, 2038. Whoohoo!

The site is a little laggy right now, as I'm sure it is suffering a heavy load from the influx of all the Digg users after the news hit their front page, but it appears to be very promising. I will post a follow up once the traffic spike has died down and I can give the service a more thorough trial. Go ahead and give it a try yourself. It is free, after all.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

Heh, they had to cancel the free promotion temporarily due to 'popularity'.

I am so glad I signed up last night.  Btw if anyone wants the XP SP3 update let me know.  I have it on filedropper.

Also I think they are trying to make the service too easy.  You can't change your password, you can't make directories, and you can't password protect files that you put up there.  I think they have a lot more work to do.

According to the site you can password protect files.  Not sure on the other stuff since I can't sign up yet.

Actually you CAN password protect the files you put up. When you go to the list of files, click on the checkbox next to a particular file. a set of options will appear at the top of the page. the middle icon looks like a set of keys. CLick on it and you'll have the option to set the file to Public, Private, or Password Protected.

Didn't try the checkbox yet.  Oops.

I think that special offer was taken down now. The link currently directs you to the normal signups. Good thing I got in quick :)

Hehe I'm not complaining :D

But I think they got more response than they bargained for... well I'm guessing faster than they thought. I find it hard to believe that a company offering something that insanely ridiculous could be that shortsighted and not predict what has just happened. *shrug*

so, i was lucky enough to get in with the free premium account.  Thanks Sully!!!
Question though, i uploaded a test file and it provided me with this URL when i click the share button:  http://www.filedropper.com/sp1installerror

With such a simple URL, does this mean that if someone else wanted to share a file with the same name as mine, they couldn't?  I figured it would hash the URL or embed my userid or something to make it distinct.
