FileDropper (http://www.filedropper.com/) is a new service, similar to sites like RapidShare or MegaUpload, that offers a convenient way to share large files with your friends and family. They are billing it as the simplest file sharing website ever. Member files are never deleted, it has incredibly fast upload and download speed, and there are no count down timers, unlike many other file sharing sites out there.
So what's the big deal, you say? From now until May 15th, they are offering free premium accounts (http://www.filedropper.com/special.php) to any "Digger, blogger, Redditter, StumbleUpon user, Del.icio.us user" etc. I signed up for my account as I am a Digg user (http://digg.com/users/sully213), but it never had me verify in any way that I am one of the above mentioned users. After signing into my account for the first time it shows that I am paid up until January 18th, 2038. Whoohoo!
The site is a little laggy right now, as I'm sure it is suffering a heavy load from the influx of all the Digg users after the news hit their front page, but it appears to be very promising. I will post a follow up once the traffic spike has died down and I can give the service a more thorough trial. Go ahead and give it a try yourself. It is free, after all.

Yup, Just signed up. Sweet.

Heh, they had to cancel the free promotion temporarily due to 'popularity'.
Due to extreme popularity we are experiencing unexpectedly high traffic. This special will not be available till tomorrow morning (9 PM PST). If you would like to sign up for accounts starting at 99 Cents please sign up here..

I am so glad I signed up last night. Btw if anyone wants the XP SP3 update let me know. I have it on filedropper.
Also I think they are trying to make the service too easy. You can't change your password, you can't make directories, and you can't password protect files that you put up there. I think they have a lot more work to do.

According to the site you can password protect files. Not sure on the other stuff since I can't sign up yet.

Actually you CAN password protect the files you put up. When you go to the list of files, click on the checkbox next to a particular file. a set of options will appear at the top of the page. the middle icon looks like a set of keys. CLick on it and you'll have the option to set the file to Public, Private, or Password Protected.

Didn't try the checkbox yet. Oops.

I think that special offer was taken down now. The link currently directs you to the normal signups. Good thing I got in quick :)

Thats bullCrap! They should have never had the posted promotion if they aren't going to actually do it. Bastards....
-
Hehe I'm not complaining :D
But I think they got more response than they bargained for... well I'm guessing faster than they thought. I find it hard to believe that a company offering something that insanely ridiculous could be that shortsighted and not predict what has just happened. *shrug*

Technically that means people could sue for false advertising or whatever....lol BAD BUSINESS!

Not really, there was no money exchanged for services rendered. But bad business, yes!!

so, i was lucky enough to get in with the free premium account. Thanks Sully!!!
Question though, i uploaded a test file and it provided me with this URL when i click the share button: http://www.filedropper.com/sp1installerror
With such a simple URL, does this mean that if someone else wanted to share a file with the same name as mine, they couldn't? I figured it would hash the URL or embed my userid or something to make it distinct.
-
Yeah I was wondering the same thing.
-
Some people on Digg were asking that question too and I honestly have no idea, but it's a very valid question. I've only been able to successfully upload one file so far (tried about 6 or 7 files). Everytime I tried to upload a large file (like a Linux ISO), it always timed out before it finished. I think the one file I was able to upload was on old version of AVG Free I had sitting around at a whopping 32MB. I guess only time will tell if this service will hold up. I am currently not holding my breath; remember the old addage that if something seems to good to be true....
-
*shrug* I have been able to successfully upload everything I put up there. I uploaded a zipfile full of music that weighed in at ~3gb last night. I deleted it shortly after for legal reasons, but yeah it uploaded fine for me. It even capped out my upload speed, which was quite nice.

'Legal Reasons'? I thought they can't inspect the files you upload.
-
Either way.. I don't want to take any unnecessary risks.
-
Why don't the two of you that actually have accounts try to upload files with the same name, then post the links you are told to use when you do it.. then we can see what happens... ie. if we'll go to one of yours or the most recent or the first or whatever.
-
could try

http://www.filedropper.com/fitestest
THis is just a text file (fitestest.txt) that contains the following:
This is a text file made and uploaded by sully.
Who's going to duplicate this so we can settle it once and for all?
-
Nevermind, I think I found the answer. I made a small change to the file and uploaded it again and the download link I got was http://www.filedropper.com/fitestest_1
I suppose the numbering at the end will continue to increment the more copies of the same filename are uploaded, though I'd still like to see someone else upload to see if the numbering persists across users. Also, the link changed, but the filename did not. When I downloaded the second one, it still presented itself as fitestest.txt.
-
You can't complain about the 7 day trial. They give you 50gb for free for 7 days.

Yup, I can confirm the link _# incrementing being cross-user. I uploaded a fitestest.txt and it came out to:
http://www.filedropper.com/fitestest_2

Yeah but the whole point of storage is usually for a long-term use. Big whoop dee doo for 7 days.
-
Now, if you ever want to find a random file, you can just start at the word and increment upwards a bit... or upload something titled that yourself and scan downward with hopes of finding cool stuff.
SOunds like somethign to do when you're bored ;)
-
sounds like a good idea... like when MS releases a new OS or SP, it's usually trivial to find out what the filename and MD5 hash is, so do your trick and see if someone has uploaded it up to filiedropper
