Pick up games
« on: January 30, 2012, 03:14:33 PM »
Was wondering if there was a way to make it easier to form pick up games. Usually, a lot of people want pick up games for all kinds of stuff, but you either need to yell out invites (which most people don't hear due to headphones), or post it on the intranet.

The intranet is great, but I don't think people check it often enough, so it's tough to gather people up in a hurry. Not sure if you could either emphasize the intranet for pick up games (and communication in general), or perhaps have a type of request list we could provide whomever is using the event microphone to gather up the masses.

Just a thought, throwin it out there for ideas.

Thanks

Believe me, we'd love for people to use the intranet site more during the LAN. That's what it's there for afterall! But you can't "force" someone to read the intranet page. We used to hand out welcome packets when checking in but we stopped doing that years ago because we kept getting bombarded with questions that were clearly answered in the packet.

That being said, we can certainly promote pickup games with the mic in addition to you posting your games on the intranet. We aim to please (and make headshots)! :)
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

We like ideas!

Everyone should have an intranet account as that is how they choose their seat but we too understand that not everyone looks to the intranet when it comes to pick up games or sometimes...anything.

Please feel free to approach a staff member to have them announce over the mic a pick up game you want to play. We're more than happy to facilitate gaming and fun at our event.

Sounds good. I'll tell my peeps to use the intranet more, and will certainly hit up the mc for pickup games.

Thanks

This works.  We approached the helpdesk a few times last year to get announcements for some of our games.   We brought CoD4 GunGame and everytime an announcement was made the server filled up.

I remember that. Someone then came up and complained to us they couldn't see your server. I forget who went to help them but found they had NEVER applied ANY updates or patches to their install.

I share this not to berate that person. (Because honestly I don't remember who it was.) I do this to make mention that you should have your games up to date!

Yes I believe that person approached me first, while I was in game.... and got snippy when I wouldnt help him troubleshoot.  DUDE! I'm busy playing LOL!

I remember asking him the general stuff.  Is the game up to date? Is pb updated? Your firewall blocking?  Your filters set in the server browser (cuz it was a mod).  He said it was.  I said sorry... i dont know then.

Dont we all have iPhones and androids by now? keeping the intranet site bookmarked on your phone browser would make it easily accessible. I was at a wedding reception at this hotel recently and i had 4g in the lower big rooms.

That's AWESOME! Each year cell signal has gotten better at that location. This even takes over that whole lower floor. And for years cell signal was awful but last year I could at least send and receive text messages. :) But to hear you had a good signal is promising. (I am excited for our old guys with wives and kids at home.)

2 years ago when we went I had absolutely 0 reception on my phone and my work phone.  VZ/Sprint respecitively.  We were back by the kitchen doors.  Made me rage!  I was tryin to line up a date but wasnt getting the texts!!!

Last year we were smack dab in the middle and it was just a tad batter.  Like 1 bar.  Enough to get vital communication through.  4G this year would be awesome!  Its on the map for Verizon

I don't think it's the area's coverage you have to worry about, it's more a matter of the signal getting to the room we're in.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!
