Was wondering if there was a way to make it easier to form pick up games. Usually, a lot of people want pick up games for all kinds of stuff, but you either need to yell out invites (which most people don't hear due to headphones), or post it on the intranet.
The intranet is great, but I don't think people check it often enough, so it's tough to gather people up in a hurry. Not sure if you could either emphasize the intranet for pick up games (and communication in general), or perhaps have a type of request list we could provide whomever is using the event microphone to gather up the masses.
Just a thought, throwin it out there for ideas.
Thanks

Believe me, we'd love for people to use the intranet site more during the LAN. That's what it's there for afterall! But you can't "force" someone to read the intranet page. We used to hand out welcome packets when checking in but we stopped doing that years ago because we kept getting bombarded with questions that were clearly answered in the packet.
That being said, we can certainly promote pickup games with the mic in addition to you posting your games on the intranet. We aim to please (and make headshots)! :)

We like ideas!
Everyone should have an intranet account as that is how they choose their seat but we too understand that not everyone looks to the intranet when it comes to pick up games or sometimes...anything.
Please feel free to approach a staff member to have them announce over the mic a pick up game you want to play. We're more than happy to facilitate gaming and fun at our event.

Sounds good. I'll tell my peeps to use the intranet more, and will certainly hit up the mc for pickup games.
Thanks

This works. We approached the helpdesk a few times last year to get announcements for some of our games. We brought CoD4 GunGame and everytime an announcement was made the server filled up.

I remember that. Someone then came up and complained to us they couldn't see your server. I forget who went to help them but found they had NEVER applied ANY updates or patches to their install.
I share this not to berate that person. (Because honestly I don't remember who it was.) I do this to make mention that you should have your games up to date!
-
Oh.. I remember the person. I helped him upgrade CoD4 from 1.0 to 1.7 or whatever it was. He was mad he had to update too....

Yes I believe that person approached me first, while I was in game.... and got snippy when I wouldnt help him troubleshoot. DUDE! I'm busy playing LOL!
I remember asking him the general stuff. Is the game up to date? Is pb updated? Your firewall blocking? Your filters set in the server browser (cuz it was a mod). He said it was. I said sorry... i dont know then.

Ya'll are lucky. I got stuck witht he guy who needed his mouse re-wired at 3 am after I had downed 4 red bulls and had been up since launch.

I'd be like EFF THAT! Go buy a new one. I can help getting you connected to our network and get in game...but re-wire a mouse....sorry bud yer on yer own.

Dont we all have iPhones and androids by now? keeping the intranet site bookmarked on your phone browser would make it easily accessible. I was at a wedding reception at this hotel recently and i had 4g in the lower big rooms.

That's AWESOME! Each year cell signal has gotten better at that location. This even takes over that whole lower floor. And for years cell signal was awful but last year I could at least send and receive text messages. :) But to hear you had a good signal is promising. (I am excited for our old guys with wives and kids at home.)

2 years ago when we went I had absolutely 0 reception on my phone and my work phone. VZ/Sprint respecitively. We were back by the kitchen doors. Made me rage! I was tryin to line up a date but wasnt getting the texts!!!
Last year we were smack dab in the middle and it was just a tad batter. Like 1 bar. Enough to get vital communication through. 4G this year would be awesome! Its on the map for Verizon

I don't think it's the area's coverage you have to worry about, it's more a matter of the signal getting to the room we're in.

If you need some suggestions, try the Instant Action section over on this page: http://www.wootevents.com/games (http://www.wootevents.com/games)
There have been a surprising amount of nice pick up and play games coming out lately from the open source scene, which take seconds to install and get playing. Perfect for in-between installation times!

This is the best way to do it. I've always gotten good results when we've gotten the staff to make announcements.
We had our 16 man Killing Floor server running and as soon as the staff made an announcement it was full. And by full I mean the amount of specimens scaled right along with the 16 people. 500+ even in the starting waves. It was madness.

Hahha I was so confused when I opened this thread from the beginning and saw it was over a year old (then vaguely remembered when Napalm originally posted it) -- oh Krakah you silly goose. Now that its been risen from the grave, I'd like to say that tournaments are great, but pick up games have the potential to be pure gold at LAN parties; especially ones as big as yours (that's what she said?)
As Krakah mentioned, we popped in our KF server, then FITES made an announcement and within minutes it was full. Not sure if they saw the flyer that we handed out or if someone asked, but this quickly became the highlight of the LAN for me this year!
I guess there's nothing wrong with people adhering to their own schedules, loosely based around tournaments etc. but to me personally, when there are literally hundreds of people gathered in the same room for a weekend of gaming that has been planned all year, its a shame we don't [collectively] interact more in the actual GAMES.
Just imagine coordinating 25% of ALL attendees to join the same empty 64 man Battlefield 3 server, or get a few 32 man Tribes: Ascend filled up, or even the underrated, but extremely fun Aliens vs Predator multiplayer... these are just some FPS games; the list is endless with the right attitude :)
I'll end my rambling with this... we all know the feeling, 2 or 3 friends boot up a game, that familiar Steam message pops up and before you know it, everyone is in chatting via TS/Mumble/etc. hooting & hollering and we're all having a blast! I know the majority of you know exactly what I'm talking about (especially the FITES guys because we did it virtually for awhile with BFBC2) and I would love if we can work toward making this a reality at the bigger events.

I am disappointed I didn't get to play KF with you guys. I saw you playing, but I was busy running around.

Ironically, I'm disappointed I didn't run around and talk to you guys. Last year was my 1st appearance and it was refreshing to put some faces to names, but this year I didn't venture away from our vG tables much. Hopefully I can make it up for the event in August!
-
Hope you guys make it out as well. It is going to be awesome!

It was INSANE. The difficulty may have been too high. I dont think we ever made it past the 5th wave. Everyone was running out of ammo. The additional players mod scales the amount of specimens to players. You really gotta pick your shots because when 5 people shoot at the same thing its just an ammo waste.
I wonder just how many people the server can handle before it gets overloaded with specimens. I had Perf Monitor up in the background and noticed it spiked a cpu core every so often, but there wasnt any noticable lag with 16. Maybe 20 or 24 next time?? :D
