Wanted: PS3 w/ Legacy
« on: June 04, 2008, 11:28:26 AM »
Hello, I've been reading how the PS3's they're selling now don't have the ability to play old games. I always play old games on my new systems. (Just played PSX games last night!)

Anyone know how I could get my hands on one for no more than $500? This is going to be a tough search :/

I’m pretty sure the 60gb ps3's are the ones with the best compatibility with older ps2 games:

I read the current 60's don't have it and the older 40's and 80's did or something like that...

I thought the European versions of the PS3 were the only ones to have had the emotion engine removed.

according to wiki:  "Backward
compatibility   PlayStation (all models)
PlayStation 2 (20 GB, 60 GB, 80 GB models)"

also found this... list of games compatible with 60 or 80gb versions:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS3_Backwards_incompatible_PS2_and_Playstation_games_list

One other thing you might want to think about is that all the old peripherals you might have for the PS2 won't work with the PS3.  They do make adapters for them but from the reviews i have read they don't work well (mainly thinking about GH).  I think it pretty much means that the hardcore console gamers are going to want to keep their PS2's even when they get a PS3.
Never, but never question the engineers judgement.

I have an 80GB PS3 and it is backward compatible with my old PSX games but like Rathe said the adapter to use your GH controllers makes it impossible to play GH2 or GH:RT80's but if you're only playing GH1 it works fine, thats only because of the changes they made after everyone was making their own GH controllers.

You can buy either a refurbished 60 or 80 gig with the 60 gig having 100% BC and the 80 gig having about 80%BC.
Or the new Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 Bundles have the 80% BC.

btw, i ended up buying a 40gb ps3 a few weeks ago.  Still waiting on the damn thing to arrive.  Took almost 2 weeks for Walmart to go from "processing" to "shipped" and yet it still says i have another week to go before it arrives.  They are out of stock, but they are still having the $100 off gift card if you buy one.  I'll let you know how it goes if i ever get the thing.

The 100 dollar offer is still on at walmart and finding an 80 gig there is the best deal possible.
I believe the 60 gig refurbs would be in the upper 300s.
I can check monday and post.

40gb ps3 finally showed up at the local walmart today.  I ran over an picked it up.  I went ahead and picked up two bluray movies... BBC's Planet Earth and 5th Element (Best movie EVAR!).  Planet Earth looks pretty darn incredible.  I'm not expecting anything special from 5th element, though i haven't watched it yet... i figure it's old enough that bluray won't look that much better... but it's a great movie and deserves to be on the latest format.  :)

No games yet... doubt i'll get any for a while.  Next on the list of things to do is getting the media extender capabilities up and running.
