New PC Build please help
« on: November 25, 2008, 10:32:45 AM »
So I have been out of the hardware discussions for awhile but I am now looking to purchase some new internals for my computer.  I need to upgrade the Proc, Ram and Mobo.  Anyone have any suggestions, I wanted to take advantage of New egg's black Friday sale.  I have about 500 to work with.  Here is the link to black Friday sale, I know I am getting the quad core 6600 and gskill 4 GB 1066 Ram.  So motherboard and Vid card.  I would like to stay with ATI if possible.

Intel i7 is out.  They are pretty damn sweet and appropriate since you are upgrading pretty much everything, as you will need to with the new technology.
That's Mr. Deception to you.

I agree. Go with the i7 if you can. There is a new socket design with the i7, so if you stick with the older Core 2 family of procs, you're locking yourself out of future CPU-only upgrades.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

Can't go with I7 since a processor is 500 and that's almost my entire budget.  Maybe I can buy someone Else's older stuff that is going to the I7 chipset.

The best way to do it is to make a wish list that is public.  You can then post the link to the wish list.

Your setup is almost identical to the server setup I'm building. I went with the 4Gb 1066 Gskill and a Q6600. I decided to go MSI with the mobo (the p43 which looks pretty dang solid IMO) and am getting a WD SE16 500GB for my HD (for 60 bucks). If you can, I'd recommend the Caviar Black as they're slightly faster than the  SE16 (cost is a little more..think 75 for a 500GB). I'm in a toss up on which one I'll be purchasing (really should prob go 4 250GB in a raid 5 setup but cost doesn't justify the cost of it plus a decent raid card)

Would highly recommend a 4870. I have two of those in Crossfire. But since you are on a budget the 4850 plays games well.

I'd get the 4870 1 gig card if i were you.  I hear the 1gig helps a lot in certain games.

If he is going to run resolution higher then 1920X1200. Then by all means go for it. That and the new ones have much better cooling solutions.

Yeah 1GB will help you at 1920x1200 but if your running only a 22" widescreen which is running 1680x1050 then you can get away with a 512 MB card and be solid (long as the core and mem clock are decent rates) When it comes to solid single cards, ATI has really stepped up there game with the 48xx series however I'd still go with an 9800 or a 260..IMO Nvidia >> ATI (despite the strong comeback because they have a multi-billion corporation backing them up..Nvidia is sorta at a handicap at the moment in my opinion)
