I don't know if anyone is thinking of getting any IT certifications soon but I have Network+, CCNA, and MCSA/MCSE books in good condition that I'll gladly part with for about $5 - $10 a piece.

I really have no respect for those sites... I learned so much through those certification tests, especially the CCNA. The idea of just having them handed to you definitely defeats the point.

I've met plenty of people with cert's with no xp. We call them paper MCSE's.

So totally agree with you guys.

But a lot of the "test prep" stuff with explain why the answer is what it is.

That's totally true about certifications. Anyone who's heard those computertraining.com adds should laugh their asses off at the poor people being misled.

To be fair though, I think you could say the absolute same about people with degrees though. A lot of people with degrees know as little as little as those "paper MCSEs". I think the key is to be genuinely curious about how things work and have an early interest in computers beyond just games. The degree is just icing for the employer because honestly, I'm learning less in say my networking courses than I did in achieving my CCNA.

I disagree, but not absolutely, which could mean I do agree with you on some non-absolute level. But I don't want to start some philosophical discussion on the academic value of which documentation would in fact display an inherent or superior knowledge in said subject matter.

I would rather work with someone with a degree... They had to take other courses and I know that I would be able to communicate with them on a meaningful level. Don't get me wrong. There are people I work with that don't have degrees that communicate well. Most however do not.

Hey Trigger, just so you don't get the wrong impression, roughly 90% of what we say is either sarcasm or an insult, so it's just expected to get Crap from anyone and everyone. It's more rare to see an intelligent thoughtful reply than anything else. In fact, one of the t-shirts we used to have just listed the top 10 insults at a FITES LAN. I'd have to agree with Shoctor's point. People with degrees do tend to be more rounded an approachable. The point I think we're all getting at though, is that education, whether through degree or certifications is a pretty bad evaluation of what people actually know.

...but forget that... because my books will help you get laid for sure
