My mom's hard drive crashed and it has a lot of photos and emails and stuff. I am wondering if by chance any of you have an old Western Digital hard drive I can buy/trade so I can transplant the circuit boards to reboot the drive and pull off the stuff I need. Here are the specs:
Western Digital Caviar
6.4g IDE
Model: AC26400-00RN
Part Number: AC26400-00RNN1
The model number is the most important. I need an exact match on that in order to transplant the circuit boards.
I hope someone here has a spare laying around :anxious:
-
Sorry bro, I have nothing of the sort...
why do you need to transplant the circuit board? Did that go bad? or the platters?
-
BTW, look for and download Hiren's Boot CD
It will be your new best friend!
-
The platters I believe are fine. My sisters boyfriend a.k.a. "I have a computer at home so I know how to clone drives" mistakenly put a jumper across the wrong pins and I think it short out the circuit board. When you plug it in and try to turn the computer on the whole computer goes dead. Remove the drive turn on the computer and it works fine.
-
ouch... hmmm
-
Whats really sad is that I may have one at home. I wish you weren't so far away, I could mostlikely fix this for you. Anyway I will take a look when I get home...
OHHHHHHH YEAH!!!!!! Its a Western Dig! 1 or 2 drives on the chain? What jumpers are set... Western Digs are retarded. If its all by itself on the cable, TAKE OFF the jumper. It doesn't freaking say it ANYWHERE!!!
-
Is it the same model number I described above? There are no jumpers on it now. No matter where I put the jumper on the drive the computer still won't turn on so something has short out on the drive. You live in Baltimore? I love the RR museum there, awesome setup :)
-
I am sorry don't have it. Thought I did... Have you tried a different machine? Maybe there is one that is more tollerant......
From what I understand, the jumpers don't/can't fry anything if if put on wrong. Cause usually hardward companies don't make things too easy for us to break.
But if it is in its entirety broken. I am sorry.
later.
-
Damn, first line of action, give the guy who broke it a fist on the cheek.
Next line of action, put it in a different PC...you never know.
-
agreed, try it out in another pc. if all else fails bite the bullet and start fresh.
-
3 pc's all do the same thing :( I tried that the night it happened.
-
I have a IDE to USB adapter that usually allows me to pull info off old drives...might work.
-
Never heard of it until now. Does it draw power through USB or through the ide power?
-
Seperate power supply.
-
From what I understand though, the drive needs to actually boot up. So if the HD is dammaged, this method may not work, but I'd be willing to give it a try at least.
-
I think you mean spin up and initialize. It may just be silly nomenclature, but when I hear boot I think of OS.

True. No its just my ignorance and poor choice of words.
-
It doesn't boot at all, its almost as if the power connector is shorting out. When I plug the drive in and try to turn on the computer the lights flicker and all power is lost in the computer, nothing works. As soon as I take the drive out and power the computer on everything works. Very odd.

Hm..then it may not work. However, Lemme know and Id be willing to meet up and try out my lil` device on it.

do you still need a hard drive? I have a bunch (3) 8 gb hard drives just sitting around and collecting dust. Your more then welcome to have one. Will you be attending the 50 man lan? If not, pm me with shipping info. I can ship one out to you. If your attending the lan, or will see someone soon who is attending the lan, let me know and I'll bring one. Hope I can help
It definitly sounds like a short (no fake, I know) Nothings rubbing is it. Usually, if you don't see smoke, your gonna be ok ( I know I'm getting quoted on that statement :2thumbsup: ) If you get it to run, look up a program called ghost. You can make 1:1 copies of your hd to cd/dvd/ and other hds. It's a nice tool but boots via floppy
Let me know

You can also make it boot from a CD. I guess thats a bit more advanced.
-
I probably have what your looking for. I just moved back to the area and I have a crapload of 6.4 gig WD harddrives. I need to dig them out but I would bet I have one you can use unless its some unique drive.
-
Only requirement is the model numbers need to match.
