Title: anyone have an old pci video card they don't want???
Post by: Dwg115 on March 16, 2009, 08:27:43 PM
Im working on an old comp for a friends son.  He has a celeron with integrated graphics that won't even run unreal unless it's in a window.  I've scowered the internet for a fix only to come up empty handed.  his motherboard deos have an additional PCI slot though.  Even a TNT card would probably work!

Are you talking the original Unreal Tournament....from 1999?!

I can get you one, but it will cost you your Core i7 ;)

You can still buy a PCI video card on newegg.  You can get a Geforce 8400 with 256 mb of ram for $48.  Of all the old computer parts I have though a PCI video card isn't one of them.  Sorry.

EDIT 2: It is indeed AGP... I'm sorry.. I haven't used this PC in years and totally forgot it was this outdated. If he has an AGP slot..maybe.. I can help.

yea the original UT runs but only in a window i've updated the drivers and even tried reverting them bact to older ones only to no avail.  weird, even in software mode it runs only in a window.  Both unreal and Ut react the same.  I managed to get Q3 to run in super ugly mode fullscreen at 30fps.  Heretic2 demo won't run at all.  The kids mom just got laidoff from her job so they don't have any money.

I have a PCI card, but it's not anything that would be useable.  Think S3.

I believe that would definitely cut it. You don't need much to run UT99.

Well from the little bit of reading I did, I found out that the latest driver for a GF2 MX card is the 93.71 forceware drivers.  Those drivers support DX9.0c.  That means as long as the card has the horsepower it should support most games available.  That was my downfall with my Voodoo 3 card.  No DX 7 or later support.

Then again even if that driver supports DX9. The card itself might not be able to use the features of DX9. I had a TNT32MB years back that I tried to use with GTA3. And GTA3 needed a DX8 card. My pc was updated to DX8 but the TNT32 was not able to use the features of DX8. And thus the game ran real slow. But I believe that the GF2 MMX will be able to use DX9.

The GF2 has T&L 2.0.  The TNT didn't.  That was the reason it wasn't a true DX8 card.

If hes looking to get the most mileage out of a free older card, I may be able to find my GeForce 3 Ti500 .. that`ll go along ways but it doesn't do texture `n shading.  Unless the G2`ll suffice.

Ahhh, good memories. I had a GeForce3 Ti 200 back in the day. I still think that was the best card I've ever had. I OC'd it to Ti 500 speeds and paid half the price of the 500. But that was an AGP card for me.  You have the PCI version of the Ti 500?

There was a Ti500 PCI version? If such a thing exists it would surprise me. I remember when the GF4 Ti4600 was god.
