Anyone have a WRT54g?
« on: December 29, 2008, 10:35:14 AM »
As the title says, does anyone happen to have an old linksys wrt54g wireless router they want to sell or get rid of?  I am looking for one to replace a Crapty wireless bridge.  I am willing to pay up to $25.
That's Mr. Deception to you.

I do, but the wireless on it seems to have stopped working. I can see the wireless network, try to connect to it, but never receive an IP. I tried different encryption/broadcast settings and none of them worked, even making it a wide open network. So if the wireless isn't working for me, I don't think you'd want it.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

If yer trying to get rid of it still let me know.  I probably wouldn't pay anything for it since the wireless isn't working, but I may be able to use it elsewhere.  Let me know either way.

I had a Netgear, I don't think I threw it out. I will look a bit. It is either 54 or 108 not exactly sure.

routers only go up to 108 Mb/s when you use a router and adapter from the same brand and they have the same compression technology.  54 Mb/s is as fast as the G standard goes.

Wireless N goes up to 300MB/s. I can get about 130MB/s at the moment. But back on topic, to honest I am thinking I did throw that router out.

But to get the 108 you have to have a D-Link adapter with the 108G wireless compression built into it.  As I said the standard 802.11g only goes to 54 Mb/s.  Source

DD-WRT!

I am asking him. Is that really what he is going to do with it?

Yeah, actually Tomato using it as a bridge.  My Netgear bridge blows donkey balls.  Keep getting very slow speeds (or what seems to be) from my xbox.  I get disconnected from Live far too often.  Plus I don't like the way the bridge 'acts' on the network.  It is supposed to be 'invisible' per say but I have issues forwarding ports to any addresses behind it.  So, I figure if I have two of the same or near the same model of router witht he same firmware it would 'play nice' with the rest of the network.

I see what your saying now.  you started off saying routers only go up to 54.  thats why i was like what mine can go 108.  Just a bit of misunderstanding.

Dude, get a Netgear WNR834Bv2. They're apparently just as compatible with DD-WRT, have wireless-N, and you can probably find one for a decent price.

I've got two old-school (pre-vxworks) WRT54GS's and I wouldn't give them up for anything. You can't really find the good versions anymore.
