Does anyone know of a wireless network modeling tool? /me eyes Nimby

Long story short...

There is an opportunity at my new job (PC & Network Associates) for us to install a wireless network so the guests at the Holiday Inn East in Harrisburg can have free internet access. This will be the first time the company has attempted to tackle a project of this scale (previous large was 10 nodes) and we want to be able to accurately assess how many access points and their placement the hotel will need rather than make a ballpark guess and hope we're right.

If anyone's used anything like this or knows of something (/me again eyes Nimby) please let me know here.

I can only tell you from experience traveling. It looks like most major hotels have once access point per floor. If you are in York, go up to Heritage Hills, fire up network stumbler and you will see what I am talkin about.

Also, I am traveling this weekend to a hotel in DC. If you want, I can grab a log from network stumbler for you.

Sully: what do you mean network modling? Coverage and power levels for the AP's through the hotel?

I normally use a combo of kismet with GPS module for the mapping of the AP's, with the proper config, kismet will make a logfile you can convert into a GIF image to show bubbles of wifi coverage in an area, or a hotel

Yeah...we want to be able to accuratley estimate how many and where to place the access points so that all rooms can get a good signal.

Looking ovet the kismet website it looks like it will do what we need it to (site survey and graphically representing the network coverage).
