Title: Windows Ate My Permissions
Post by: .:F3ar0n:. on August 27, 2006, 06:03:29 PM
Ok

So a lil bit back I was using Hamachi which requires you to pyshically share folders and such online. Well needless to say when I decided to unshare em..the permissions for some wierd reason set up my comp to having the folders as read only. So I'm pretty torque'd as of now since I just seemed to loose 48gb worth of music.

Does anyone have any programs or step by steps on how to reset windows permsions. Please help as I'm about to put my fist through my monitor. Any help would be appriciated. I know I'll get some quality assistance here..but in the mean time, I'll continue to google.

FYI-I was testing out this program for my friend originally called takedown. Think it was originally used in NT 4. Anyways, after I ran that through dos I noticed my comp giving me permission issue.

Are you logged in as administrator on windows?  If so, you shouldn't be able to lock yourself out of anything.

Yeah so I logged into windows through safemode cause its the only way to get into admin stats. And then I gave myself admin permision. But that didn't work still. Some reason I was still locked out

Here's what I ended up doing. If anyone runs into permision issues through xp..this is the way. I sorta stumbled upon the exe of subinacl. It's originally used with windows server 2003. (since takeown sucked for WinNt)  Anyways, so I used subinacl in dos command and took over permisions that way.

subinacl /subdirectories E:\music\ *.* /setowner=dave

So pretty much I made subinacl search through all the files in the sub with happy *.* search and convert em all to my directory. Only took a lil time and it worked. Sometimes I grin being so clever

there is a much easier way to do it....

Make sure you have simple security turned off.  Then right click on the upper directory you want to change permissions for.  Then go into the Security Tab.  Click on advanced and then go to the Owner tab.  Click on the "Replace ownership on subdirectories and files." box and take ownership.  You can then replace security permissions as you see fit.

See i was around there but couldn't change anything. For some reason I was completly locked out. i did try that along with inhert permision in order to take back over. But both didn't work. Thank god for subacl

I actually ran into this one time where I could only read my files, couldn't delete them or even rename them no matter what permissions or ownerships I assigned. What I ended up doing (since I could still read everything) was copying everything to a different drive, formatting the "read-only" drive, and then moving everything back to its original location. When you copy the files to the backup location, it will apply the permissions of that folder, basically allowing you to do whatever you need to. Format the old drive and any type of lockout is also gone. Move things back to get things back in line with your storage plans.

Just another way to tackle the issue....

If you have XP Home edition which it sounds like F3ar0n has then there is no way to shut off simple file sharing.  This is noted on the top of the KB that you posted.  Also.  I sincerely hope you set a password for the Administrator account F3ar0n.  That account is a severe security issue when it lacks a password (which it does by default).

Take a look at this page from one of my profs at Penn State. It's just a quick list of things to do after a new install of Windows that often get overlooked.
