Title: WHS Power Pack 3 Beta Uninstall Problem
Post by: sully! on April 05, 2010, 11:51:36 PM
So, long story short, I've gone and bullocksed up my WHS just a bit and I'm hoping one of you that run WHS can help me out.

Last summer I installed a pre-release version of Power Pack 3 for WHS. Before you can install the final version of PP3, you first have to uninstall the pre-release version....but I can't do that. I deleted the uninstall folder somewhere along the way and I can't remove it.

So I came across this thread at Microsoft Connect: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en/whspowerpack3beta/thread/96024cc5-4f18-4eeb-b947-305fb77b0d9d (http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en/whspowerpack3beta/thread/96024cc5-4f18-4eeb-b947-305fb77b0d9d) and it looks like my next step is to somehow get the contents of C:\Windows\$NtUninstallKB968349$ back onto my system so the uninstall can occur.

If any of you also installed the PP3 beta and happen to still have that folder on your system, a zip/rar file sent my way would be much appreciated and save me many hours of re-building WHS in a VM just to grab that folder out of there.

Thanks!

I use WHS but I didn't install the beta.  I checked my server and I have the folder but it is 26 megs.  How can I get it to you?

a zip/rar file sent my way

You should have my e-mail address and zipping it should make it small enough to e-mail.

It is 26 megs zipped.  Work email is limited to 20 megs and my hotmail account is limited to 10 megs.

heh, i think the full version of pp3 was out for a month or two and i kept checking download sites wondering how i could get my hands on it, not realizing it only shows up on the built-in windows update and *only* after you uninstall the beta version of pp3.  Oh well.  Lesson learned.  Glad you got it worked out.

<looking forward to the next version based on win2k8 R2>

I'm soooo hoping they include a Media Center app (ala Windows 7).  I currently have my WHS hooked up directly to my TV and use xbmc.  But with the Ceton cablecard quad tv tuner coming out in a month or two, it will require Win7 to watch tv.

They also need to release MSE so that it installs and runs on WHS.

Does WHS support iSCSI targets?  I am thinking about dabbleing with a WHS box but it seems like everything I want to do just sorta works out of the box using *nix.

current release of WHS is just purely Windows Server 2003 32bit.  Not sure where it stands between the editions (Standard vs Enterprise vs Small Business Server).  But if you have drivers that support win2k3 server, then you should be fine.

Don't know how the Drive Extender service might react to an iSCSI target though. I'm sure you'll find no help from anything MS provides as that is an "unsupported use", but it never hurts to setup a test machine and try it out. You can grab a 30-day trial of WHS from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/windowshomeserver/eval.mspx (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/windowshomeserver/eval.mspx). I think that used to be a 180-day trial, don't know why they changed it.
