Who here runs XP Pro x64?
« on: May 21, 2009, 11:47:24 AM »
And did you have trouble finding drivers for it?  If you know of a place to find x64 drivers, can you post it here?

Also:  Did you find that having an x64 OS causes more headaches than it's worth, or not?

Another Question:  Do you prefer Vista X64 to XP x64?  Just wondering due to the support of DX10 in Vista only.

I run Vista x64 Ultimate. And well I love it, been stable since I built the machine. I have never had any issues with drivers. Mainly I look ahead of time for the hardware I want and see if it has any x64 support before I even bother purchasing.

Vista x64 Ultimate here as well.  I would not touch XP 64bit for the very reason you mentioned... drivers.  MS has not nurtured the OS and not very many drivers are actively written for it.  On the other hand, in order for a driver to be WHQL certified for Vista, it has to be designed for both x86 and x64 versions of Vista.  So, if something works with Vista, it will work regardless of 32 or 64bit.

Unless you decide to try to get a 10 year old HP All in one printer working with Vista 64bit, or an old program that relies on kernel mode drivers (most virus scanners, partition managers, system level defraggers like disk keeper, etc), you will be fine.

Windows 7 x64 all the way! Seriously....there's no need to hold back from using Win7 as your full time OS, it is that good and that mature (already).. If you're worried about drivers, there may be some instances where you find Win7 specific drivers, but if not, the Vista x64 drivers have worked for me when I didn't have a Win7 driver available.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

Well, with windows 7....how long will these new releases last until they decide you have to buy it?  I am also considering a multiboot system.  XP Pro x64, Vista Ultimate x64 (if I can get a legit key) and possibly Windows 7 x64.

I believe the RC isn't set to expire until March, 2010.

I was just gonna post that I found that it ends in March of 2010....I think I will try to install it on a seperate partition and multiboot to it.  That way I have something to fall back on.

just make sure you install the latest (newest) version of Windows last so that you use its boot loader.

Win 7 x64! w00t! I have only had issues with syncing my iphone, but I think that has to do with the USB subsystem... So I just plug it in to my Vista 64 machine... Only thing that I miss from 32 bit is Gametap exclusive games... Sam and Max.

Just installed Windows 7 x64 on a test lenovo machine here at work.  Not impressed but not un-impressed either. Seems better than Vista, but I'll have to see whether it stacks up to XP x64 performance wise.

Will be attempting a dual boot install of XP Pro x64 and W7 x64 tonight when I get home.

EDIT: So after google-ing whether Windows 7 runs DirectX 10 and not really finding a definitive answer.....does windows 7 support direct x 10?  I keep seeing references to M$ WARP running DX10 off the CPU, but nothing directly says "W7 supports DX10".  Any insight?

Yes, W7 does support DX10/10.1

Would be pretty idiotic to make an OS not support DX10, when the one before it, did. I guess that's why you won't find much on it. It's assumed.

Ya, that's been my experience as well.  Outside the new taskbar which will take some getting used to, the things that still frustrate me about Vista are still there in Win7.  An example is the networking control panel is still a cluttered mess and it takes too many clicks to get to the basic network connections to disable or tweak settings.  Things like UAC are a non-issue for me since i use TweakUAC which leaves it enabled (i'm still running as a slightly less than Admin user), but supresses the extraneous prompts.  They still haven't added outbound firewall notifications similar to Zonealarm where it will block all by default and prompt you when a new app wants to access the network.  As many have said, it is basically what Vista should have been (in terms of performance and polish) but not much more.

I really didn't read much of this thread, but I'm running XP 64-bit on my main machine and I had no issues finding drivers for anything.

I have a dual boot to both windows 7 and Xp x64...and to my old installation.  I am giving 7 a try to see if i like it, but I can already tell that it's too vista 'ish.  nstuff is right about the network control panel...it's too cluttered with useless info.  Plus my gig connection is considered 'pubilc'  and will not let me change it.  Otherwise, I kind of like it.
