I run one system (the one I usually browse the web with) at 1024x768, and my other system at 1600x1200.

I gather you're looking at what res FITES users are using so you know what res to design for right?

This is a battle/argument I've dealt with in the past. A good place to see current browsing trends is http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

That page has general browser, OS, display stats, etc. but the site as a whole is a great resource for web programming (including basic PHP).

Exactly.

However, most people who visit fites are goign to be techies, and I expect them to run a higher res on average.

how do YOU think it looks @ 1024?

I'm using 1152x864. I wanted a res that was bigger than 1024x768 and smaller than 1280x1024. And from here, the site looks perfect.

EDIT: errr just so ya know, i accidentally clicked the wrong radio button. I meant to click 'other' but chose the one above it. :P

1024x768 - aside from the streaming gay pr0n it looks great!

yes, 1024x768 looks good, I wouldn't design for anything higher than that though. Side-scrolling REALLY sucks, as the site now does at 800x600.

But you're right, your target audience will probably be running a higher res. I can't remember how at the moment, but I know you can capture screen res settings into a .csv file on the server that you can then analyze the data with Excel or something to tabulate totals/average/modes of the stats.

Of the systems I use, nothing lower than 1280x1024 ... my native rez is normally 1600x1200 ... and then if I have a monitor that supports it I run 1940x1440 :D

from the laptop I'm posting on now, I'm at 1600x1200 ... go linux go! ;)

On the same PC, from left to right, are two 17" Viewsonic LCDs (VA720 and VE700), running 1280x1024@75, and a sad little 16" viewable CRT running 1152x864@75.

Radeon 9800 Pro 128 meg for the LCDs, a Voodoo3 3000 PCI for the CRT.

That's 3,616,768 pixels, enough to hold ~21.5576% of all possible 24 bit colors, and certainly enough to surf the web, write code, chat, and manage my music, all at roughly the same time. I need more mem. heheh

And my two old IBM laptops, each running 1024x768. One hinge and the battery in one are both pretty much gone, so I just have it sitting in a corner of my room, and I use remote desktop. The other laptop has the only DVD-ROM in my possession, so I remote into that one to get VLC going without having to remove the stack of papers and various kitchen wares sitting on it. Its battery is fairly new, got it at the beginning of this year, so I use it for portable applications as well.

hrm, first post... hello :P

I PM'ed Pride about this issue in the past

Obviously RN-Systems.net is automatically geared toward widths higher than 1024x768 (standard). Even on 1280x1024 the page displays the left navigation modules/blocks and all article content, however, only a smidge of the right navigation modules/blocks.

Pride suggested that the problem was "directly tied into your layout for news articles." which is probably the case...

My V-Ball coach from high school, self-employeed Network I.T. Support (http://www.netguruz.org) and DJ (http://www.mickulz.com) on the side :earmuffs: hosts the webspace for our site; he's located in New Cumberland, PA.

So, I upload, et cetera, via PC Anywhere and browsing/transfering the files from the Web Server to My Computer, just to view their contents to try to find the problem, can be a pain in the :moon:

Anyways, its something we'd really like to fix because when ya use 1600x1200 resolution all the time ya tend to forget about everyone else who views the site!

Dudes... I made some minor tweaks to the site over the weekend, but most importantly, I figured out a way to modify the default dimensions of the web site, overall... its too ironic how I came across fixing the problem!

Anywho, rn-systems.net (http://www.rn-systems.net) should be geared toward 1024x768 resolution and lookin' puurrdy -- feedback?

looks ok at 1024x768 too, no horizontal scrolling, but make your topic icons valign=top. Right now (at 10x7 at least) they just seem to be floating in the middle of the story and have no purpose. Put it at the top and I can tell what the topic of the article is at quick glance.

Thanks guys, and sully, I'll look into that at some point.. we were gonna put them top right like most sites, but wanted something different. For awhile we kept the "article" short and to the point, that way the topic image centered and looked symmetrical to the rest of the page. However, when I post bigger articles like my CS:S screens etc. it widens too much like you said;

also... I've been trying to implement a WYSIWYG module (as well as the latest shout box)... and the result is that I currently have no admin page AT ALL since I updated the files... we are running version 7.0 and it seems most mods only support 7.1 and up...
so right now I'm screwed and trying to fix that... :sadwalk:
