Virus help
« on: March 01, 2010, 01:51:25 PM »
So while I was away at the LAN party a friend borrowing one of my old laptops got a virus from facebook trying to close a pop up window.  The laptop had avg on it which I realized sucks.  I never got around to installing avast on that laptop.  Well I'm trying to get rid of this virus And it refuses to download avast from the website, I can't transfer it over the network.  I burnt the install file onto a cd and the laptop says the disc is blank when I load it.  I'm assuming this is the virus.  Does anyone have suggestions?  I'm thinking I probably need a boot disc, preferably a cd as my external floppy is buried somewhere.

I feel bad for the guy.  He was afraid to tell me.  He is generally very careful but a clever person coded the virus in the close box of the popup.  I told him anymore end the process when that happens.

Have you tried reading the disk in Safemode?  Another option would be using one of these bootable antivirus disks.  http://www.techmixer.com/free-bootable-antivirus-rescue-cds-download-list/

First...what type of 'virus' is it?  Is it a virus or is it a rogue anti-spyware/anti-virus?

I'd say screw the formalities and go straight for the killshot. If ComboFix wont fix it, I dont know what will. Let it run it's course and it will kill just about anything you run into. There isnt anything I havent gotten rid of from ComboFix
