Having some problems on the boy's computer, only on 3D games though (UT2004, BFVietnam, HL) not on 2D games. 8O (Battle for Middle Earth, Warcraft) Strange? :? Yes, very strange. :?
I first noticed the problem when he started playing Half Life. There's an opening sequence where Gordon rides a train through the mountains. The audio was scratchy and the sounds/audio slowly got more and more out of synch with what was happening on the screen. :?
For example, there's a voice over that runs while the train goes through the tunnels and at certain points the train goes past other people and things that make noise. I could see the things happening but the sound didn't sync up wth the activity on the screen. 8O
Then, further along on the track there is a point where the train pauses for a door to open, the train goes through, then the door closes. 8) Well, this time I could see the door open and close waaaay ahead of me, as a matter of fact the train pulled up to the door just in time to see it close. 8O The train proceeded into the closed door, the game got stuck in some kind of loop, and I had to hard-reset the machine.
I fiddled with every audio and video setting I could find, uninstalled and re-installed audio and video drivers, updated DX9 (since it affects audio and video). Even tried those Omega drivers that Arch is so fond of.
I tried playing UT2004 and noticed the same audio problems there. (scratchy audio, not over driven speakers, but scratchy audio, I should make an MPEG of it tomorrow so you can see it.)
I played a match and the sounds progressively got more and more out of sync with what was happening on the screen. For example, I saw a rocket fire and then heard it a second or so later, crackle, then it syncs back up for a second or two, then it gets out of whack again. It got worse and worse with more action on the screen, then the game crashed, but it didn't give a typical UT2004 crash report. Which suxxors. :x
I wanted to see how screwed up this thing really was so I ran the Tournament opening movie on his machine and mine at the same time and the video and sound went WAY out of sync. WAY out.
The boy played Battlefield Vietnam and it did the same thing until the game finally crashed.
Frustrating.
He played Battle for Middle Earth with NO audio or video problems. 8) AT ALL. If you're not familiar with that game, think of Warcraft or Diablo. Same thing. You're locked in an overhead view of the action.
And I can't get the damn audio to crackle for the life of me, no matter what I do unless I run a three dimensional game. ONLY three dimensional games. Crazy man, crazy.
I ran dxdiag.exe, DX7 and DX8 were fine, DX9 failed the test so I removed DX9, (that was a pain in the ass if ever there was one) then re-installed it and it passed the tests. 8) Didn't fix a damn thing, same problems as above. :x
I uninstalled and reinstalled the devices (sound and video) with new and old drivers, checked for any conflicts (none, though I did notice that the AGP and USB host controller are sharing an IRQ), installed the latest .net framework (neeed for the ATI control panel thingy) even went as far as nuking and paving and re-installing XP, just so I could be sure none of it was caused by any Windoze updates. None of that fixed anything.
I checked BIOS settings, made sure the RAM timing was right, made sure the AGP aperture was set to 128, bumped the CPU, AGP and mem voltages just in case they were unstable, tried default BIOS settings, tried turbo BIOS settings... You know, the whole kit and caboodle.
The only thing I haven't done is tear it all out and sniff for burnt stuff. I'm just convinced that this is SW related.
Christ, I even tried Windows help! 8O That's pretty bad, huh?
It's an Albatron 865PE Pro mobo, P4 2.0GHz, Sapphire Tech. ATI Radeon 9600XT 256MB RAM/128 bit, 350W power supply, no additional sound cards, just resident 5.1 channel support.

Wow...very thorough, both in documenting the problem and your attempts to fix it.
The only thing that stands out to me is the 5.1 audio. Can you try forcing that to 2-channel stereo? Make any hardware adjustements in BIOS and then make sure the Windows audio control panel is set to use stereo.
Try that and then we'll take it from there. Good luck!

Thanks for responding Sully, mucho appreciado. :2thumbsup:
Tried your suggestions, no change. Dammit. :badboy:
Just for sh*ts and giggles I checked the properties on EVERY system device in the device manager and this is what I found:
System Timer - No drivers installed
System Speaker - No drivers installed
System Board - No drivers installed
Numeric Data Processor - No drivers installed
Direct Memory Access Controller - No drivers installed
Motherboard Resources - No drivers installed
Motherboard Resources - No drivers installed (yup it's listed twice)
Intel(R) 82801EB SMBus Controller - 24D3 - No drivers installed
Programmable Interrupt Controller - No drivers installed
Now :bomb: I SWEAR TO GOD :bomb: I installed all the drivers on the CD that came with the motherboard. Looks like I fooked something good though. :bigcry: I'm going to go back through it again and see if I can find something new on the CD.
Than :10: ks again for the response.

Oh yeah, one more thing... just so you don't think I'm a total dick, there were no exclamation points or notations of any kind by any of those devices in the device manager. I uploaded a screen shot for you to see but Pride has to approve it first.
Don't ask me why though, I should think that if something didn't have it's drivers installed Windows would want to bring it to my attention. Right? Uhhh... :bigcry:

Anybody in the York/Harrisburg area have an extra AGP card they wanna part with so I can elimiate the video card as the problem? :juggle:
-
I'll try to find my Nvidia card I had before I upgraded. Have you defragged your HD as well? Just in case, it wouldn't hurt.
-
Thanks Negley, that's great. :2thumbsup:
I've since checked these devices on four computers here at work and they have exactly the same attributes. So that's not it either.
I'll de-frag the HD, then pull and re-seat the video card tonight. Don't know what else to do. I guess just about the only thing left is a HW issue.
PS-I installed Unreal (which uses DX7) and Unreal Tournament (which uses DX8) to see if there were still any Direct X issues and both games did exactly the same thing as UT2004. Crackle crackle skip BOOM!!!
Argh.

Took the card out last night to take a peek and see if I could find anything physically wrong with it. Everything looked fine until I removed the VPU cooling fan. It looked like there was a little excess thermal paste on the VPU, it was oozing down over the sides onto the board. It hadn't come in contact with the other components on the board (might cause a short circuit) but I removed it all and replaced it with Arctic Silver. Just enough to do the job right, not as much as they used.
Put it back in, no difference. Argh.
So since I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel here... Could memory configuration have anything to do with this? Bear with me... Some of this is kind of advanced memory operation...
The mobo has four mem slots, which could give me two pairs of sticks running in dual channel configuration, for a total of four sticks. (Fig.1) I don't have four sticks in there, only two in the primary pair slots.
One stick is 256MB and the other is 512MB. The 256MB stick is in the primary slot, with the 512 in the secondary. (Fig.2)
Now this is where I get a little silly...
Maybe I'm not seeing problems in other games because they're not resource hogs and never touch anything above the first 256MB of each stick. Maybe the problem is that UT and other games are trying to use more memory and it's only available in the secondary stick, not the primary. Know what I mean? BAH! I'll make some mspaint art!
OK, here you go. If you don't already know how dual channel memory works you should read this first, it's VERY basic:
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/buying_guide_memory?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~section=011
Which says that the way I'm using it is not the most efficient way to do it, but nothing leads me to believe it should cause catastrophic failure. I do know that memory in a dual channel config will only run as fast as the slowest stick...
(http://img141.exs.cx/img141/9586/memory7ux.th.jpg) (http://img141.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img141&image=memory7ux.jpg)
So my question is, what happens if the machine, when operating in dual channel mode, tries to access (Fig.3) memory above the first 256mb (512MB total, purple on the diagram) and there is only more memory available on the second stick? (red in the diagram)
Hmm.. the more I think about this I think I made a big mistake in trying to use two different size memory sticks in a dual channel config. Maybe I'd better just run both sticks in single channel mode tonight and see what happens.
I'm such a n008.
Anybody know how to measure the CAS latency in RAM? The stuff in this machine came out of an old Dell, so I didn't get any specs with it.

http://www.memtest.org/
To rule out memory errors for you. You can download an ISO or zip archive and run it from a floppy, USB key, or burn to CD. Let it run through all it's tests at least 2-3 times. If there are errors, make note of what memory range they are occurring in and that will tell you which stick the problems are on (<256=1st stick, >256=second stick).
-
Ahhhh... thank you very much. I'll give that a shot.
As for the memory... Last night I ran them both in single channel mode and nothing changed, it still crashed. Oh wait, except the computer slowed down. Yeah, it slowed down. Heh. Now I took out the 256MB stick and am only running the 512MB stick.
I disabled the sound COMPLETlY in the BIOS and I managed to get through an entire DM and part of the next one before it crashed. I might try a PCI sound card before flashing the BIOS...
Thanks for the help.
-
I have found out the painful way this week that flashing the bios can cure many ills.
As for the memory, I would put the 512 in the primary and 256 as the secondary. I saw an issue this summer with a rig that wouldnt run properly if it didnt have the biggest one first.
-
Finally fixed it! :2thumbsup:
I started doing as a friend in another forum suggested and go through the BIOS one painstaking setting at a a time disabling and testing, re-enabling, etc... and before I did I decided to read up a little more on a few of the BIOS settings...
http://www.tweak3d.net/articles/aperture-size/
The reason for writing this guide is that many people still ignore the importance of AAS or set it incorrectly. Generally measured in megabytes (MB), AAS is the amount of system memory (RAM) shared with an AGP graphics card in order for it to have more memory to process textures and other visual data.
Some people think that the more RAM you share with the graphics card, the larger the performance boost. In some cases, this might be true. In others, it might result in a performance drop. There are two common outcomes from setting the AAS too high: (1) If you share too much RAM with your graphics card and an application takes advantage of that, you will have less RAM for other functions of the software, and possibly for background applications. (2) If the graphics card does not utilize the memory, it is not taken from system memory. In this case, there are no problems with AAS sucking all of your system RAM, despite its setting in the BIOS configuration utility. The latter is the most common case, since most people have enough memory now to compensate for a high AAS, and most applications would not take all of the memory anyway.
Without fully understanding what AAS is I had set it for 128, just like it is on my machine. The important differences (in this case) between his machine and mine are that his Radeon 9600XT has 256MB onboard RAM, and my Radeon 9600XT has 128MB onboard RAM. Also, my machine has 1GB PC3200 2-2-2-6 system RAM and his has 768MB PC2100 2.5-3-3-? system RAM.
There's either an incompatibility problem between the RAM on the card and the system RAM or the card/game was unneccessarily stomping all over the system RAM and robbing the applications of the memory they needed.
So based on what I read in the above article I lowered the AGP aperture size as far as I could. (4MB) Then for good measure (and because I couldn't get the sound to re-enable) I slapped in a Creative Labs 24 bit Sound Blaster Live! sound card, OC'd the beast a little (from 2.0GHZ to 2.4GHZ) while I was in there and then ran benchmarks, UT2004, HL, HL2, and BF:Vietnam all day trying to crash it. No crashy-crashy, no crackle crackle BOOM!.
It seems to be working, I won't trust it for another month though.
The only thing left to do is try cuzznkev's suggestion with the RAM. I really would like it to run dual channel if possible, there is a noticeable performance increase.
Might try to push that OC a little more agressively too. Maybe when I'm positive this puppy is stable.
Next project is to OC my machine. w00t!
PS -Thanks for the help everyone. You guys don't even know me and still took the time to try to help. That's great and I really appreciate it. :10: :2thumbsup:
