This one's for Sully (Comcast Q)
« on: February 01, 2008, 11:25:04 AM »
I bought an Arris CM450A Cable modem off of craigslist.....I was wondering, If I dosconnect my cable modem and connect this one, can it sync up without me calling Comcast?  I know it won't let me have net access and all, i just want to see if it is working properly.  I hooked it up a week ago with Comcast on the phone, but they said they could not 'see' it on their end even after verifying the MAC and model (which they said it was perfectly compatible).  According to the lights it never synced with the 'other end' ( I dunno the correct terms - would that be a Dmarc?)  Anywhoo, I just want to see if I let it sit on the line, whether or not it will sync correctly.

It should act like a home/self install kit. It should sync if the line has signal and if you try to use it, it should garden wall you to the Comcast page no matter what web address you put in. To actually use it you have to call Comcast and have them change you MAC address. Something to do with rate codes and nonsense... I have never worked for Comcast but I have learned enough through Sully and FiveAces. FiveAces did the phone support for this area for a while.

I know you have to call Comcast to 'initialize' the modem to work with your account.  I just wanted to see if it will sync without having to call comcast.  I called them once and it didn't seem to sync, but I don't know if the person was an idiot on the other end of the phone or I just didn't give it enough time to sync....

The answer is that if it's compatible and your line signal is good. It should sync.

But, if the mac ID is not provisioned to his account he won't get out at all.  When we switched to the new gateways for the business side, I found that the modem got two hops out on traceroute and then died.

I'm not worried about getting out, I just want to see if it syncs...that is all.  If it does, then I will call Comcast and have them take my old modem off my account and use the new one.  Basicly, i am just seeing if I wasted $10 on a craigslist purchase.

Well, I think I can classify this one as an ID10T.   My cable line center pin wasn't pulled out enough (or pushed back too far) to make contact with the new modem....heh  :hitself:

Getting to this thread late, but everything Mark said is correct. It is called "Walled Garden" when a modem is on the system, but has not been provisioned for use. The CMTS (not DeMarc, that's for phones) or Cable Modem Termination System, is what you were thinking of.

When your modem is in Walled Garden, as Mark stated, you can only ever get to the Comcast self-install kit page, where you're supposed to be able to provision the modem yourself. But I remember way back when I first got Comcast (before I worked there) it didn't work and I had to call anyway. Once they put that modem on your account you should be golden.

You weren't trying to use that cheap-ass "gold-plated" Radio Shack crap cable were you? If you need a good piece of RG6 let me know, I've got some extra laying around.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

I do actually, but I need a longer run of it...say 50-100ft.  I had to run a line through my attic from my bedroom.  It works perfectly fine now.  I knew it wouldn't let me out of the New Subscriber area -the walled garden- I just wanted to make sure that the modem actually worked.

I will eventually put a new line in.  This was kind of rushed since I did it when we first moved in.
