The nvidia g92 BIOS
« on: January 27, 2008, 07:07:25 AM »
Anyone who has recently purchased an Nvidia based vid card with a g92 core ever notice that their card runs kinda hot when under load?  I have, and it's due to the BIOS not changing the fan speed appropriately when it is set to automatic in Ntune....or if you are not using ntune.  I have to manually set the fan speed everytime I play a game!  It stays at 29% at all times even when under extreme load and the temp rises to above 80C.  I even tried to use RivaTuner and it still sticks at 29%.  i even try to change the High/Low speeds and whenever you slide the bar to change it, all the bars move with it.

Evga released an updated BIOS, but I don't think it is working correctly.  My fan speed still is locked at 29% unless I change it manually.  Anyone else experience this and where you able to resolve this?  This issue has been posted on EVGA's forums, Nvidia's forums and a few others that I found through google.
That's Mr. Deception to you.

I didn't RMA it although that was an option.  I used the evga stepup program and got the 8800gts 512.  It's a little more expensive for about the same performance but it includes a better cooler and reviews show it runs a lot cooler during load.  my card would overheat constantly and my temps would go north of 95 degrees celcius.  the performance was great form that card just that simple drawback.  I did what decepticon did i updated my bios and just set the slider to about 80% when playing.  I didn't realize everyone was having this problem.  thought it was just me.

Well, I just am going to use RivaTuner to manage my fans.  With custom profiles, it's actually pretty easy.

There are two generations of 8800GT coolers, the original with a small fan intake and a later one with a larger fan intake.

I flashed a copy of the 8800GT SSC v5 on my cards and they run much cooler, crysis does not crash anymore.  eVga has a BIOS that spins the fans up more aggressively, it does work, but their tool only flashes eVga cards.  You could flash any othe card with evga bios.

The G92 8800GTS is a totally different beast.

For those who are interested and who may not know, I found this nifty little guide to setting up custom fan profiles in rivatuner.  Works wonders!  Works better than nVidia's fan ramping.  Also can add custom profiles for overclocking readily available in a right click menu you can customize.
