Steam/Router Issues
« on: November 07, 2006, 06:13:25 AM »
Good day.

I know how it work, ya need to forward some ports from your router to the box you're using Steam on. Ive done it before with no issues. Now I have a new router..and its not working. Here are some pictures to show what I am doing. Hopefully someone here can point out some errors so I`ll be good to go.

1200 falls within 1000-5000

So now 1200TCP/UDP are covered which is the friends network

That covers the other ports required, Right?

And DMZ is disabled.

So whats left? Why isnt this working? The router is a new Belkin F5D7230-4. Suggestions?

You have the right ports being forwarded.  If you are using DHCP on the router to assign the address make sure that your system has that IP.  I know with my system when I do reboots the address often changes which is why I went to a static IP for my desktop.  The other thing to check is to make sure that the ports are being forwarded to your router from your modem.
Never, but never question the engineers judgement.

I am using DHCP however, I too had a similar issue where the IP would change after a reboot. Thus, I use a static IP for my desktop (and a few other systems on my home network). This desktop is being routed to 192.168.1.50

Also, anything else i forward to that box works just fine. You`ll notice the first table is for SimpleMU and works just fine.

Can anyone suggest a good wireless router that`ll work?

Why do you need to forward all these ports? I just don't get it... SimpleMU is a mud CLIENT... It should map right through the NAT... Same with Steam... All your client apps should go right through. Only services you run on your side should need the mappings.

It does. but If I wanna idle on a moo/mud with any client, I can only do so for exactally 10 minutes, then the connection is dropped due to inactivity. So port forwarding the internal telnet ports used (1000-5000) allows me to stay connected and idle for days without an issue.

With my old router, i couldnt get steam to work until I forwarded those proper ports. Then it worked just fine. Now with the new router..s`not workin` :(

Okay. i turned on uPnP and it didnt do anything different. Then.. I decided to turn off NAT..and well. I hadda hard reset my router and lost all settings. I didnt have time to reset it back up to the previous specs because I scooted home from work really quick to try the uPnP stuff.. bleh

At home I use a linksys wrt-54g.  It works really well, and I have never had to forward ports for any client apps (except bit-torrent).  I know with the linksys and probably the belkin too, that you can use other firmwares that are more customizable if needed.

Id be interested in exploring these other firmwares but can I really bung up my router with them (more so than it is already) and not go back to the original firmware? Have any links?

After googling around a bit, I found this this.  It is a modded firmware for your router.  It is possible to hose your router if you mess something up, but you might be able to restore to the original version from belkins site.  If you really mess it up, you could just return it.

Does DMZ work like a catch all for port forwarding? I know that it shunts all port requests to a specified IP and thus isnt protected by the firewall, but lets say I port forward 1000 - 5000 to 192.168.1.50 and then DMZ 192.168.1.30 .. will everything outside of 1000 - 5000 be sent over there?

Crisis fixed for now...a hard reset of the router and re-setup of the settings seemed to fix it.
