[neurotic mental rant] I seem to be having trouble landing the helicopters in desert combat. I can get them off the ground but when I go to drop off troops I.... I just can't do it! Augh! I keep rolling over and crashing! Somebody help me! Is it my trakball? I hope it isn't. I don't want to go through detatchment!

And then theres the hovering.. Oh god, the HOVERING! I pitch and roll, but the damn copter won't stay still! Gimbal lock! AUGH! Help! I don't don't what to do! I've tried caffiene but it just doesn't seem to work. I'm thinking of sticking to planes but the A10 tank killer is just too slow... what should I do? [/neurotic mental rant]

hmm... maybe I should start going to bed a bit earlier.... thinking up stupid crap like this isn't helping me reassure myself that I'm sane. It's 2am and all's well!  :anxious

the key to landing the helo's is, come in head on, dont land while straffing.

If you go in head first (and level of course) the helo wont roll over forwards like it does when you land sideways.

As far as hovering, it is a soft balance of rudder right/left, pitch right/left, and altitude up/down.

well with landing its not a matter of rolling forward... its  matter of rolling left or right.

That is what he is saying....if you come in forward, not straffing, you won't roll over sideways. Not that I can even get one of the things off the ground.

I already found out why I was rolling sideways... its my trakball. I land it ok but I have to quickly jump out because if I sit in the thing for longer than 30 seconds, I tend to start rolling left or right. I guess I could just take my hand off the trakball when I land...

I was having a similar problem in EoD on the Charlie Don't Surf map. Right after I got in the helo, it started to roll to the right, but I'm using a gamepad, not a trackball. If I took off right away everything was ok. So my advice is to land and get out quickly as you've already figured out.

At least you can do it in the right order. I have to get out, pull the rip cord, and then land, errr, crash :blush
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

Shaun, in that Charlie doesnt surf map, it does it to me too, I think it is because they are on a slight slope.  When the propeller starts, it moves it just slightly.

I found that as soon as you enter, if you hold down DOWN key, you can keep it from moving while others hop in.
