Evertime I get my system working fine and without error, something has to screw up. It must be my bad luck aura.
This time, the problem is with my OS. I don't know what I did to deserve this, but for some reason yet to be explained, my shutdown/restart/logoff buttons under the shutdown menu do not work. Really screwed up.
So I ask you fellas once again, to please help me out of this rut I seem to always put myself in.
I notice I never get the same problem twice. :huh

next time you reformat (agreeing with sancho) GHOST your HD after reinstall.
Then install office, and all of your junk (games, porn player, etc) :angel

ok, let me rephrase my question. Can anyone help me with this WITHOUT using the reformat tactic?
I just reformatted about a month ago and just finally got everything back on here that is needed to survive. like hell i'm gonna reformat now. good god no.

Good luck! :baby

Try Microsoft's support knowledgebase if you're looking for answers to this. It sounds crazy but this particular error is not a common one and really should reformat the partition and start fresh. If possible use the restore function and restore it to a previous date when you think the buttons were working.
-
It should only take you a couple of hours to reformat, I don't know why you think it's going to be that hard... In all honesty... And wha, you have no job! So you have plenty of time :) :laugh

its not the time its the fact that i'm gonna have to copy all my valuable (of course valuable in this case can mean various things) data to my dads pc over the network and then recopy back and that is an extremely major pain. And to reformat just because the shutdown button won't work? No way.
-
What is THIS?! My shutdown button now works without reformatting? Amazing! Thank you Pride for supplying those links. I'll have to keep that second one in mind. I'm guessing it was something with the startup programs. went into msconfig and took out the programs that were crap.

Just one more thing to add to this, for this issue or really any other "phantom" problems.....
Check your systems for spyware/adware/malware, etc. I recommend Ad-Aware, available at http://www.lavasoft.de. I have seen malware cause more problems lately than any other source. It is becoming/has become such a plague on the computer using public I would personally consider it right up there with viruses and worms.
I can't count the number of times that simply running Ad-Aware has fixed people's PC's. It's ridiculous.....

Another possible solution would be to do a repair install. Using that option got me out of a sticky situation when going from a KT7-RAID mobo to my A7N8X Deluxe (the problem was with the Highpoint controller drivers - the system would blue screen right off the bat).
You would have to re-apply patches/service packs afterward, but you wouldn't have to move any data.

Ad-Aware is a very good program. I've been using it for awhile now.

Partition Magic your HD, move your info to the 2nd partition, reformat the first partition, and move your data back. :beatnik
