Verizon Connection Speed

Ok something strange happened last night.  I got into the Fites COD4 server and I was having pings around 280.  Normally I am around 70-80.  The only thing I have changed in my network lately is I added a Windows Home Server and a media center system.  Both were shut down yesterday while gaming as I was hoping to improve the situation.  I have noticed that through repeated restarts of my modem it seems to shift to different servers.  Right now the Battlefront servers I play on have a high ping and the COD4 server is good.  Any clues or ideas as to what the hell is going on or should I switch to cable??

And yes I have changed ports on the modem I am connected to, switched networks ports on my machine, and pinged from other systems and they are all consistent.

I am also having a similar issue. I've googled the problem and it seems that Verizon is having issues with their hardware. I am getting wicked dropped packets atm. For example.. I have the ventrilo window open atm, where it shows the status of the server.... it drops about 30 times a minute. Router diagnostics show a 65% packet loss or higher. Have reset the router to default (which has always fixed similar issues in the past) but shows no positive effect.

Getting slightly irritated. So far, it seems like Yahoo Messenger is the ONLY program that isn't experiencing disconnects or high ping. I see no need to hastily freak out and switch to cable. Seeing as it is a more widespread problem, I'm willing to bet they'll hopefully fix it soon. If not, I'll be calling them up later.

Good luck on calling them.  I did and spent 40 minutes on the phone for them to say that "your speed is good so you shouldn't have an issue and there is nothing we can do."  And I have been thinking of switching to cable for a while now.  I'll pay $66 a month (first 6 months) for cable and net.  Right now I pay $50 for cable and $35 for net.

I mentioned your suggestion to the tech support on 10/21 and she totally ignored me and asked me to skip the router and connect my box to the ONT directly. That didn't help. So she said the ONT might need to be replaced which I was told by other tech supports that it was fine.

So on 10/22 I called again, this time I was put on hold for like 10 minutes or so while the network specialist was checking my line again. While waiting, I asked the middle man to find out if my data connection was recently changed over to the gigabit ethernet, he confirmed it was changed on 9/30. I told him I couldn't pinpoint the exact date but my problem did started around 10/01 or so but waited to call Verizon until the 4th and then I told him to tell the specialist what ProFIOSDude had suggested. THEN the specialist just asked me to wait 24 to 48 hours and if it's still not fixed, call them again. Well, guess what? The next morning (10/23), I checked my download speed and it's back to normal.


As well as...

Came home from work, and Power-Cycle the ONT by unplug the power cable from the outlet, disconnect the battery from the battery backup unit, and let it sit for about 10min. Also, unplug the power cable from the router as well.
And, re-connect the battery to battery backup unit, plug the power cable back into the outlet. Also, plug the power cable back into the router. Ran a test. Speeds back to normal.

Yeah but I am on DSL and not FIOS.  and my download speeds are right where they used to be.  It is just my ping time to servers has gotten really slow.

I think I might have found the issue however.  I went over to DSLReports.com and they have a nifty linequality tester there.  I started it and these are the results.  Which show that the problem is definitely on their end and not on mine.  Now I just have to find a way for them to see it and fix it.

Got mine fixed. Called up VZ and they rebooted my ONT. Problem solved after 8 hours of pulling my hair out.

Glad to hear it agent.  Unfortunately I don't think that will work in my case.  Gonna have to give them another call and point them to the line quality test.
