Well, as some of you remember from another thread, I purchased a PNY Geforce 6800 GT off ebay. Came in excellent condition, no scratches or any dust. Well, the problem I'm having is in games I'm getting graphical distortions. Lines coming from characters and such. Sometimes the screen will just go black (I think after coming into contact with one of these lines directly in my characters field of view) but I can still see my health bars and other things.
I reformatted last night in hopes this would solve the problem. It didn't. I'm using forceware 84.21 (I'm pretty sure it's the latest). I've tried older drivers to no avail. I checked temperature (it was running 54C core right after trying Oblivion), the fan is running on the cooling unit, power should be fine (550W PS), and I've even tried reseating the card.
Now I don't know what to do. Does anyone know what might be causing the graphics problem? It only seems to occur in games, even if I turn graphics settings all the way down. Agent, you said you have a 6800 GT. Did you encounter anything like this?
-
Didnt that say that that card did not come with an onboard fan??
My gut reaction is that it is overheating.
Remove side of PC case, put big fan next to it, and see if it still occurs.
-
My next reaction is that it's a PNY! Lifetime warranty! Send it back!
-
Yeah i've gotten crazy graphical artifacts like that. Seems to happen when i overclock. It generally occurs when my card heats up over 80c. So yeah, I'd have to agree with pride's gut reaction.
I really do not trust fanless cards.
-
Are you sure this is a 6800GT?? or is it a 6800 that was oc'ed before you got it?? Try getting NTune or RivaTuner and clock the card down some. That may fix it.
-
Alright, this is NOT the card that doesn't have a fan. It's this: http://www.pny.com/products/verto/discontinued/performance/6800gt.asp
And it's a used one so no lifetime warranty. Anyways, I may have found the problem, it might be underpowered. I read on these forums (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=5) that someone was having the same problems and a new, more powerful PS solved it. Well, I was running a 500W but it lacked the 6-pin aux power connector. So I went out and bought an Antec Smartpower 2.0 at Staples. I even asked one of the salesmen if this includes that connector and he said it should since it's standard.
Guess what the piece of Crap is missing (no emoticon listed can convey the anger I was feeling). But nice little Antec has a number to call to purchase one.
THANKS A FudgeING LOT!!!!! So, now I have a cool new PS that STILL can't supply me with the right connector! So now my games will just have to sit for a little until I can order this piece. Hopefully, that'll solve the problem with my vid card. If not, I'm out $162.50.

From the link to the product llDayo posted:
Warranty and Service
One year (plus an additional 2 years upon completion of a registration form on PNY's website)
The latest up-to-date drivers at www.pny.com
PNY :badboy:
They used to have a lifetime, but even then, most lifetime warranties are non-transferrable, ie, only the original owner.

Booo I have a 4ti Die on me and well I used work (reseller) to send it back... LOL they didn't make it anymore and sent me a 5600 LMAO But that was a while ago..
BTW This is my 800th post!

My one buddy had a geforce 2 card that we overclocled the living Crap out of and it locked up really bad. about 2 months after that it had those exact symptoms. We permanantly damaged the thing. Try underclocking the card. if that solves it, the original owner probably overclocked it to see what he could get out of it and then sold it on ebay.
-
I don't know anything about over/underclocking a video card (let alone anything else). Anyone got any suggestions? I found the Advanced Timings section in the Nvidia manager but I don't know what to do with it.
-
The easiest way to enable overclocking on an nVidia card is to use the CoolBits registry entry.
You can just google "coolbits.reg" or paste the following text into notepad and save it as "coolbits.reg". Then double-click the saved file to import it into the registry.
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak]
"CoolBits"=dword:00000003
STANDARD WARNING: Messing with your registry settings can be very dangerous to the health of your computer. If you do not know what you are doing, please don't do it.
With that said, after importing this into your registry, you will have a new entry on your Nvidia settings called Clock Frequencies. Select manual overclocking and slide the sliders to the left a little bit at a time to see if it clears anything up.

Alright, I think I found the problem - my VIA chipset is incompatible with the Nvidia card. Looks like I need a mobo :(
Now, if I could only find some money...
http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t5519.html
BTW, in that thread it says that forceware versions 61.72, 66.70, and 66.72 might work. Does anyone have one of these around or know where I could still download them? It seems to be my only chance.
-
How much are you willing to sell one night with your wife for?
:jk:
-
If you brought this up a few weeks ago I would have, but I cleaned out some old stuff recently and got rid of all my old nVidia drivers (at ~20-25MB a pop, they add up)
But you could give this a try:

Considering the poor quality of the potential consumer it'd have to be an awful lot for her to even think about it!
hehe
-
Sounds like a sloppy business.
-
Not only that, the market is very small.

Just a quick update on this, I got it working. I'm using driver 61.76 (I think that's right, I'm at work at the moment) and I was able to run both BF42 and Oblivion with pretty much max settings and NO LINES! Hopefully I'll finally get to play Oblivion for a decent amount of time but I tested BF42 for about 20 minutes on Omaha Beach with TDM and was racking up the kills! With higher resolution, my aim just became much more accurate with a machine gun ;)
-
61.76? lol if thats right..... thats pretty weird.
-
Cause that would be AN OLLLLD driver.
-
I just installed the 91.31 beta drivers ... nvidia control panel works in x64 now! It was broken in 91.28 =(
-
Nice, I really have grown found of the 9x.xx series. The Control pannel is nicer than that other crap they had going.

It's 61.xx, I just wasn't sure of the decimals after the 61. But yes, that's about the correct driver! If you read the link I provided earlier pointing to the forums that discussed the VIA conflict you'll see that the problem was narrowed down to any drivers 67.xx on up. It just so happens that I have a bunch of older drivers on hand just in case problems ever arose, and this time it did. I actually have another driver that's 56.xx, I think that's the oldest I have. It didn't seem to be causing any problems, of course I haven't really tested Oblivion all that much
-
didn't via put out a new driver that fixed the conflict?? It is hard to think that other people have this same problem and have to use drivers that old without updating.
-
If they have, I have yet to hear about it. If anyone sees anything about this, PLEASE let me know!
-
Looking around in the nvidia forums I found this:
Start->control panel (might wanna change control panel to classic view)->display->settings->advanced->troubleshooting->> bellow the hardware acceleration slider there is a box you have to untick, Enable Write Combining. Uncheck this then it will ask you to reboot.
It is worth a shot.
-
I'll try to give it a look next chance I get. Thanks!
-
Tried it last night. I installed the latest driver then unchecked the box. After that I tried to open my games and it wouldn't. Oblivion didn't recognize the video card and BF42 just flickered the screen black for half a second then went back to the desktop. IE ran slowly because the graphics were loading at a snail's pace.
Putting the old driver back and rechecking the box fixed everything again. I think, for now, I'll just stick with this as I really don't run into any problems.
