Title: Opinion on job opportunity
Post by: devilduck on October 09, 2003, 10:17:05 AM
Hey Everybody :ears ,

I have a slight problem on my hands.  I have recently been accepted to work as a network technician at a local high school here for a set salary wage at 37.5 hours with all kinds of great benefits (health, dental, etc.).  However the job at the school will require me to learn Macintosh since the school is 2/3rd's apple.  I ain't too crazy about that.  My current job doesn't want me to leave and said they will not only match what the school is offering but beat it.  Plus they pay hourly not salary.  I am currently the Manager/Computer Tech at a small computer/network/retail company.  I am having a hard time deciding what would be the best course of action, because to be honest, I just want to get my MCSE and get on the road in another year or two max.  What do you guys think, stay where I'm at with the better pay and call the shots or move on to the school with possibly better opportunity down the road?   :dizzy

Tough one.

I have been in your shoes, sort of.  I used to be the IT Director's Assistant to Shippensburg Area School District.  So I know what is involved in IT for a school.

First off, if you want MCSE, which "company" is more willing to pay for you to get it?

With a school, your job is secure.  Funding rarely goes down, and they keep shoving more and more money at the tech part of it.  At a tech company, with the economy the way it is, you are more likely to lose your job. (unless you guys have the market cornered on something)

Schools, you will be working with older technology, and getting anything new is a major pain, do you have that problem in your current job?

Don't let money sway your decision.  I know alot of people who would be willing to take less pay, for a more suitable job situation.  Money does not equate to happiness when going to a new job.  Consider the stress level (At a school, it may be higher or lower than where you are now), consider "required overtime", weekends, holidays, etc.  If you work for the school, do you have to join a union?  Are you a state employee?

Think of all of these before making a decision.  But dont just leave it up to the salary.

Either way, good luck with your decision.

Thanks for the quick response Pride.  Actually I enjoy where I'm at now.  You can ask Sancho, this place used to really suck and I wanted out bad.   But now things are going pretty good.  I have people that I like to work with and I can do things at my own pace.

The school thing to me seems to be more stressful.  The budget for this school is actually quite good.  You should see all the Ibooks, Imacs, Iwhateverthehell they have there.  They are definitely ahead of other schools that I have seen.  No union at the school.  I think I would be a state employee.

The only reason I went forthe school is because of money.  I haven't been paid the best at my present job, but now that I may be leaving they are throwing all this stuff at my feet.  Plus they do pay for the MSCE tests.
