Oops! Need help :(
« on: June 29, 2006, 07:24:52 AM »
I had reformatted my computer at the beginning of this month and for some reason I installed the VIA Raid utility that came on my motherboard disc (note, I only have one SATA drive and a regular backup IDE drive so no RAID setup). Not sure why I did it but it wasn't doing anything so I thought nothing of it at first. No drives showed up in the utility either. Well, last night I was on my computer and decided to get rid of the program. It asked me to restart and when it did Windows paused on the load screen, then a quick blue screen, then the computer restarted. That's what it does now and I don't know how to stop it. Safe mode doesn't work as it restarts with that as well.

To me it looks like the SCSI controller may need to be reinstalled but I'm not entirely sure. If that's the case, how do I do this? I can boot with my WinXP (Home) disc and get to the repair screen but I'm not sure what to do after that. There isn't a whole lot I'd lose on the computer if I had to reformat (just a few semi-important emails) but I really don't want to have to reformat again! Any help please?

What about a repair from the install disk.  It basically reinstalls, but saves all ur programs and registry file.  Shado mite be able to clarify a lil tho

Yep, just make sure you have the miniport driver on a floppy and press your F6 to get the extra divers menu. :) Then wait 900 years for the repair (Looks lmore like an upgrade.) ;)

Well, the files would be on my motherboard CD. I could try installing from there but exactly where would I do that since I can't even get Windows started?

You need another machine to make those floppies... Else you won't be able to even install windows from scratch!

Are you sure about that, ShadoHawk? When doing a WinXP installation it prompts you to hit F6 (I think) to install third party drivers for SCSI devices. Then the drive gets recognized.

That's EXACTLY what I am talking about. You need to load the third-party drivers. How do you think they get there? Magic? You need the mini-port driver disk.

Ok, I'll try that. But, won't that start installing WinXP again? What exactly do I do after I load the third-party drivers again?

There is a first option that will say something to the like of: "There is a an install here do you wish to repair?"  Say no... Continue on like you are installing then it will show up again that you have an install do you wish to do a repair.... That is were you should go on..............

Ahhh bother...

Cool! That puts it into perfect perspective! Although, that doesn't say anything about having to answer twice to a repair question. Seems like it's only once. I'll give it a try after work tonight! Thanks!

5. When you come to the screen in which it says "Welcome to Setup." press Enter to Setup Windows XP, do not press R as this will just start recovery console.

That was step 5 I was talking about with the first "repair" option.

If this works, Shado, at the 150 during pub play I'll give you one free frag in BF42 in the manner you choose.

Step 8 in your link didn't come up for me. After the user agreement it didn't say anything about detecting a previous windows installation. So I ended up reinstalling :(

I'll still give you the free kill though!
