Title: Ok so here's a weird networking issue I have....
Post by: decepticon on June 12, 2011, 08:49:41 PM
Built an HTPC recently.  Everything is all good and setup.  Set my jadams approved pfsense box to assign 192.168.1.99 to that box via the MAC address.  All is well for a while.  All of the sudden, I can't see my HTPC box over RDP via IP anymore.  Check DHCP leases and it is now getting an IP for guests ( I only allow 5 IP's outside the static leases).  I check the MAC on the HTPC's adapter against my static lease MAC list.  One octet (the 2nd) changed from the original 16 to 00.  I thought it must have been my mistake somehow.  A couple of reboots later it changes back to 16!  I have seen it change several times now back and forth.  The adapter is an on board Realtek rtl8169.  Google really didn't help much.

As of now, the HTPC is leasing the 192.168.1.99 address yet the 2nd octet is 00 and this is after changing the static lease mac back to 16.

Any thoughts?

EDIT: So I updated the drivers even though Winderps potato said it had the most up to date drivers and after 1 reboot the MAC is staying the same.  But we'll see how long it lasts.

My only other suggestion (other than statically assigning the IP in the HTPC, of course) is that most NICs allow you to specify a MAC address in the advanced settings of the driver. Device Mangler-->Right-Click NIC-->Properties-->Advanced Tab. It's usually called "Network Address". Put your desired MAC in the box and it should stay that way, allowing you to manage your IP addressing from pfSense.

I know I can manually change it, but aren't MAC addresses supposed to not change on their own?  Just freaky.  As of about 5 reboots after the driver update the MAC remains the same.

add some cheese with that MAC and I'm sure everything will work out for the better.

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all night.

With Crapty drivers/hardware anything is possible, hard set the MAC and update drivers/FW is able.

Crapty driver was the culprit,  MAC hasn't changed since I updated them.  Silly windows.

Also, Ive seen MACs on network gear show up as 00:00:00:00:00 when the interface/device is failing.  Hopefully your issue was just the driver.  If you have this problem come up again, Id try to toss another NIC in the HTPC and see if the issue continues.

Will do, but so far so good as of late.
