OK guys and gals, show off your geek-i-tude.
Let's have some good suggestions for palm top computers. I want color, I want lots of memory, I want MS Office applications, I want Blue Tooth, I want a microphone for voice recording. I'm writing it off for taxes so I would imagine I could get away with something rather pricey.
I like the Axim.

This looks like the top t!ts though.

Sharp Zaurus
SL-6000L
I've got one, LOOOOVE IT.
takes CF and SD, built in wireless, usb1.1 port on it, 640x480 screen, and runs linux like a champ :)

runs linux like a champ :)
what linux distro runs on a pda?

netBSD :D
actually the beauty of linux is that you can compile the source to almost anything. The zaurus runs it's own distro of nix', but I think there are others out there. For all intent they are just little computers minus some features.

acutally, I've already modded my zaurus ...
running a 2.6.8 baseline kernel, with full filesystem support, bluetooth and wifi enabled, samba, ssh
the only thing I'm missing is firefox or a decent web browser ... I can't get any of them to compile right :(
ah well, just need to plug at it more
one thing I love about the SL-6000 ... slide out keypad, covers terminal access pretty damn well
EDIT: and btw, Tekie, "netBSD" is not "linux" .. it's BSD ... fool ;p

This HP is hot. Wireless LAN all the options and Windows apps I need. I checked out the service upgrades too, lots of options there.

Do these things running a Windows OS have a record of being hacked, cracked, or infected with viruses?

Nimby,
I'm tempted to get the Zaurus based simply on the fact that it's NOT Windoze, but unfortunatley most of the world runs on Windoze so I need to be sure of compatibility. Do you run any M$ apps on there? I'm really only concerned about the big ones like Word and Excel. The above linked page says it can sync to Outlook, so that's good. This isn't encouraging -
Limited MS Word & Excel Compatibility Yes (Not all functions are available when importing/exporting Microsoft Office files.)
I've only diddled with Linux in the past, so my knowledge is limited. Is this something that a n008 can set up on their home nework with relative ease? Any pitfalls with this thing?
Maybe "dabbled" would have been a better word... ;-) Anyhoo, I usually don't shy away from new new levels of gadgetry or geekiness, I just don't have the time right now to put into learning a new tool. My evenings lately have been eaten up by swimming in the pool, gaming, and swilling beer, and I like it that way.
I guess I really should have posted what my intent.
1. M$ Excel spreadsheet logging of trouble calls. 5-30 per shift. I need it to sync to a master log on our network when I dock/sync. It would be nice if they would let me join this to our domain, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
2. Sync to home and work email.
3. Edit Word documents and print to network printer.
4. Listen to Muzak.
5. Browse the internet, download and print PDF's.
6. Download pr0n. OK, just kidding... (or am I?) :-P

Here's a thought... WinZip or some other archiver for PDA's? Haven't seen one mentioned on any of these pages... Hmmm...
