Router problems

Well i think my router finally died after almost 8 years of faithfull service.  Anyway,  Im in the market for a new one and im currently looking at the D-link dir825 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127258.  Is there anybody who has any recommendations or info they could pass along to me.  I appreciate it.

If you don't want to go the wireless N route then why not get a cheap linksys and use wrt?  To be honest, it's the best router I have ever used besides a pfsense box.  And you can get one off craigslist for cheap.

EDIT: didn't see the product since it was removed for some reason.  I see that you do want to go the wireless N route.

Ive been eyeballin' this netgear for a while now, it comes with a free wireless n adapter right now.  Its atheros based so there are no hacked firmwares for it.

Well i use the wireless for laptops and itouch and whatnot.  so i that router gives the ability to run b/g/n speeds at the same time.

Do you have any wireless N devices?  If not and you want to save money...go for the G route.  Again, cheaper and more customizable if you get the older style.

when my family comes to visit a lot of my relations use wireless n for laptops and they like to use them all over the house so i was hoping to get a router that uses it.

I use a Dlink 615. Reception is great even through these old walls. And it is wireless N. Picked it up for like $50.

If you dont have any N devices then I'm with Decepticon on this... Go with a cheaper router that supports Tomato or DDWRT.  If you havent taken notice the N standard hasnt exactly caught like wildfire.

It sounds like you just want to spend a good bit of money to have features you wont use for a few years ;).  If you check out the compatible routers on the Tomato or DDWRT list there is a possibility you can buy a router off the shelf that supports it and not pickup a used one (like I did - $60).

If you went with a router setup like that, then you could always add an N access point to it later to get the additional wireless speed (when prices drop more and when you have devices that actually can use the N standard).

I'm sure it's caught like wildfire.... in California! ....Cuz of the wildfires they like to have and such.

HA HA.... ehhh... I'm still tired. It's sunday morning, leave me alone.....

Have to agree, buy a cheaper, used/older G-unit, dawg (heh). Install WRT and you'll be golden. It's not like you can't plug other things into it when the need arises.

i appreciate all the valuable info you guys gave me and i will try to make the best decision based on it.  I am still considering a router with the N standard just because im pretty sure i will be using it soon.

didn't catch this until today... i recently bought the Netgear 3700 and have been very happy with it.  It is simultaneous dual-band and thus can run at 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz at the same time (both broadcasting different SSID's).  You can broadcast a 3rd SSID for a "guest mode" which restricts anyone connecting to it to just the Internet and won't have access to anything connected to the router's switch or other wifi devices.  The internal switch is gigabit btw.

It's a pretty expensive router, especially when you can get G routers for < $30.   But I've been very happy with the speed, range, and feature set.  I just switched to Verizon and they make you use their actiontec router... well i'm still using my 3700 as well.

It comes with a usb port but it's only used for file sharing an attached storage device.  Unfortunately it can't be used as a print server.
