Never Buy a D-Link Product again
« on: November 06, 2005, 01:43:49 AM »
I bought a new d-link wi-fi router about a week ago (DI-524). Along with that, I bought 2 wireless usb adapters and  a wireless network adapter. When I went to config the thing, I couldn't get my internet up and running. So I called D-link tech support to help me out. What a waste. The router wasn't giving me a good ping (192 private pings). So he says to place the router with another one. I replaced it at circuit city where I bought it and tried it again. Again, I couldn't the router to config an ip. I would run the setup utility (192.168.0.1 is the default) and it would request timeout and not connect. The funny thing was that the cable modem was bypassing the router and connecting me online. I must of done every reset in the book (soft reset by holding in for 10 sec...hard reset by turning off while holding reset in) and nothing happened. It seemed like the router overloaded or something. When I called D-Link support, the guy went through the usual steps. After he couldn't figure out what was wrong, he said he be right back and hung up on me. At this point, I called back and unloaded on the next guy that picked up the phone (sorta regret it now) To make a long story short, I was told to return the router again for another. I exchanged it of course, but for a linksys. Let me say that linksys is amazing for wi-fi routers. I ran the softwar config and was up and going in seconds. It has the one touch config button built in so it's so easy. I'm glad I went with linksys (even though I spent an extra 40 bucks) My recomendation to you, if you ever wanna buy a wireless router...linksys is the way to go. It was easy to config and has everything built in (even can enable security by selecting the wireless cards specificly from the computer). Just a suggestion

Linksys stuff is amazing, I currently have a wrt54g v3 as my AP (still need to make it my router)

Dlink's pro stuff is okay, but I will admit I am also a fan of linksys/cisco

Yes, Linksys/Cisco, if you're reading this post, we love you. Sponsor our LAN...please. In fact, I'm wearing the Linksys shirt from QuakeCon this year.

I also love Linksys products. Have the Linksys cable modem, WRT54G v1.1 router(it's a bit older than tekie's), and a little 5-port switch. The only non-linksys stuff I have is Netgear 5-port switch, which is ok, but I have to power cycle it every now and then because it stops working.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

I picked up a D-Link router just over a year ago to run a teamspeak from my home for my MOH, COD, BF clan. My unit is wired however instead of wi-fi. I haven't honestly had any problems with mine, and its built in firewall works rather nicely. I've never had to call for tech support, but in a lot of ways I can't say I'm surprised over your experience.

i have the d-link 4300 wi-fi and it took no more then 30 sec to config it to work.  I also used an old dlink wired router before this and it was very easy to config.  I've used linksys as well and Im not really seeing much of a difference in either router other then features.  maybe the di 524 is just a bad model.
