Network help?
« on: February 07, 2009, 05:47:50 PM »
I'm having a bit of a problem sharing 2 folders over my home network. Well, it's more of a problem with 1 folder, but since they're both being accessed by another machine, I guess they both count.

My main machine is Vista Ultimate installed on a terabyte raid made up of 2 seagate 500gig drives. It also has a third 500gig just sitting on it's own sata port. I have "videos" shared on the seperate drive and "videos 2" on the raid drive(s). They're split up like that because I have too many things to sit on one drive.

My XP machine can access and play back files from the "videos" folder, but it can only see and not access the "videos 2" folder. Why this happens is beyond me. I have network discovery, file sharing, public folder sharing (I know it's for the public folder, but I figured it couldn't hurt) and media sharing set to "ON" and printer sharing and password protected sharing set to "OFF" under the vista network and sharing center. The XP machine has also run the network sharing wizard thingy, just in case. When I try to access the offending folder, I get "\\Number-1\Videos 2 is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied." Again, this is weird as I can easily access the "videos" folder.

The only thing I can think of, and call me uneducated, is that something wonky is going on with the "videos 2" folder as it's sitting on the raid and the raid is stopping me like a black knight would guard a small bridge, what with it's "NONE SHALL PASS" speech. I mean, I've been doing this kind of thing for a while now and I'm no expert on computer networking, but I've managed to get windows home network working on a pretty sufficient level.

I don't suppose anyone here has ever run into the same type of problem? Even if no one has, could someone possibly help me get by this little snag? I built a small 2nd system to have next to my bed just for the purpose of having a media player at the foot of the bed and it's annoying not being able to see everything that I want to.

..... I hope I wasn't too confusing with that.

Hmm...permissions

Check your folder options to see if simple file sharing is enabled? Sounds like advanced file sharing is enabled and your blocking permission

http://www.home-network-help.com/share-file.html

Hopefully this may help??? Idk. sounds like thats your prob. Simple File Sharing FTW (except i don't think its available for vista...windows file sharing is such a pain in the arse. Never seems reliable when you need it. Thats why I just host a hub and file share over dc++ if I need to over network. One of my biggest disappointments was that they STILL haven't really fixed Microsoft Network sharing with Vista. Maybe they'll finally get it to work with the next OS... Sorry, I was just really annoyed that we still have problems from 6 years ago and they haven't decided to address them yet

./ end rant

I've scoured the web (the results on pages one and two in google) and I actually saw the simple file sharing bit as a possible solution, but then saw that it's disabled in anything past vista home. I think that's what I read, at least. Instead, there's "Use sharing wizard." That really offered no help at all. I tried enabling the guest account on vista, but that did nothing.

The permission for both folders are the same. The bad folder actually has an "everyone" entry and it's set for them to only read it, not write or both, just like the good folder.

I'll check that site, though. Thank you. :-)

Do you have matching accounts on both machines? (Username and Password?)

That was my first thought too.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

I do now. The vista machine's main and only account is "Ken" with no password and I just created a "Ken" on the xp machine, with no password, and logged onto that account. Still no go.

A)  As F3ar0n suggested, make sure simple file sharing is disabled... this forces all connections to authenticate as 'guest'.  If the setting exists, it is usually in Folder Options > View tab > somewhere near the bottom.  I think in Vista, it is called "Use Sharing Wizard"

B)  As Shoctor suggested, the username/pass that you have setup on your XP machine... make sure you go into control panel on your Vista machine and create a new admin account with this exact same username / password.  If you login to XP with johndoe/password, then create this same johndoe/password account in Vista.  What this will do is when your XP machine tries to connect to Vista, it will no longer prompt for a username as it will be able to authenticate with the userid that is currently logged in (johndoe).

C)  Once part B is done, right-click on the folder that you have for your "Videos 2" Go into the sharing tab and then click on the 'advanced sharing' button.  Change the share name to "videos2"  Just to remove the space in there.  This shouldn't be causing a problem, but who knows.  Next, while still in this area, click ont he permissions button.  Click on Add, and enter the username that you previously created in step B (the same username you use on your XP box) and then click OK.  Now make sure it has change and read checked, then click OK.  Click OK on the 'advanced sharing' area.  Now you should be back to the main properties of the folder again.  Move to the 'Security' tab.  Click Advanced button at the bottom.  Click Edit again.  Then click Add.  Enter the username from your XP machine again.  Select everything in the 'Allow' column except for 'Full Control'.  DO NOT select anything in the 'Deny' column.  Click on the 'Apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container only' check box.  Click OK.  Now check the 'Replace all existing inheritable permission on all decendants with inheritable permission for this object" check box.  click OK.  You may see a window pop up saying that it is applying permissions.  Wait for it to complete.  Click OK again and again until you are out of the properties.

Now try to access the share from your XP machine... this time, simply go into Start > run and enter "\<vista hostname> ideos2" where <vista hostname> is the hostname of your vista computer.  Do not include the quotes.  You should hopefully see all the videos now.

If you have any other usernames on your Xp machine (family members, friends, whoever) that you want to have access to the videos2 folder as well, then repeat steps B and C for all additional usernames.

vincegun, you need to make sure the account you use has a password.  I know this can be annoying, but for security reasons and to allow sharing to work properly, you need it.  Just create a password for the 'Ken' account on your XP machine... then do the same on the Vista machine.  Once you've set the password, restart the xp machine (or just log out of the Ken account and back in again using the newly created password).  And do all the steps in my previous post.

That did it. Having the same name/pass on both machines allowed access to the folder. More specifically, the whole password bit is the only thing that I changed. The accounts on both machines have the same name, but I just added in a password on both and viola, it worked. Thank you very much.

The only thing I'm curious about is why it allowed access to the one folder when there was no password and not the other. Any ideas?

without looking at your machine... the only thing i can think of is the sharing permissions and ntfs file system permissions that I suggested in part C are different between the two different folders.

Original XBox or Xbox360? 360 has this capability built in and it will be able to see anything running Windows Media Connect services (including Windows Media Player library items). I believe there are other programs out there too that will run as a service if you don't like WMP or want to have it running all the time. If you're talking original XBox, then I don't know as I've never dealt with that system. Decepticon or Shoctor are probably pretty good sources for that though.

Sorry. I meant on the pc. I've already used the 360's media connect thinger and as it's sorely lacking in support for different types of media, I've figured out how to get Tversity working to transcode and stream almost all my media files. There are just a few things that it wouldn't work it for whatever reason.

Actually, since Windows Media Center seems to not want to be able to switch languages and/or subtitle tracks on and off (unless I'm missing something), I'm going to be using XBMC on the second pc. I've got it running, but it has a problem where if I switch language tracks while a video is playing, the video speeds up to about 3x-4x it's normal speed. Other than that it works fine.
