I got it fixed. the onboard NIC died, bought a used card from aliance computers and its fine now. so thanks for all your help even if some people ";cough; Dave ;cough;" wern't verry helpful. lol

Did you try this?  netsh int ip reset c:\tcpipreset.log
  This will reset the Winsock of windows xp and can restore functionality if there are any problems caused by adware or anything else.

Bah, you beat me to it. This would be one of the first things I tried.

EDIT: Oops, didn't see the second page :P Looks like problem resolved.
