Migrating to windows 7... Help.
« on: November 07, 2009, 08:05:33 PM »
So I guess I'm pretty AR about my computer.  I have been using windows XP 64Bit for some time now.  I am feeling a little overwhelmed with migrating from XP (I have been using it since launch forever ago) to 7, what kind of utilities are you people finding super useful?

On a vanilla install of Windows 7 x64 ultimate I will install:
Drivers, nForce and what not
AVG free
Office 2007
Adobe Acrobat (2009? whatevers new)
Sun VirtualBox, Gotta have a Ubuntu and XP64 VM running

Should I add any more utilities to my list?
[Intel core i7 4930K..........Asus Rampage IV Black Edition]
[512GB Samsung 840 PRO 512GB......2xWD Black 7200 2TB RAID0]
[32GB G.Skill DDR3 2400 4x8GB....2xEVGA GTX780ti Classified]
[Corsair 900D.......Primochill CTR250.......Corsair AX1200i]
[MCP35x2.........Swiftech Apogee HD......Swiftech MCR420-XP]

I found myself not craving any OS addon apps after I got use to the built in features in Win7.

Decepticon, what other features does RocketDock give you that the new Win7 taskbar doesn't have?

The switch really shouldn't be too awful. Drivers support is exponentially better than XP. Most hardware will probably work immediately after install. However, you'll definitely want to get the latest driver from nVidia or ATI.

If anything, I hope you have another hard drive or partition to back up whatever files you want to keep since you're going to have to completely format the disk (there's no upgrade option between XP and 7).

As far as applications go, I really haven't found anything major that I could use on XP that I can't run on 7. I was a bit disappointed that a couple utilities like Hyper-Terminal and telnet are now not included but that really isnt an issue for most users. Even if it were, it's nothing that PuTTY doesn't do.

Telnet sure is included. You just need to choose to install it. But for Telnet BBSes I use mtel. There is a copy of it stickied in this forum.

I guess you learn something every day :) ! I don't think I've looked at the "Turn Windows features on or off" menu since I installed (I usually only bother when it's a Windows Server installation and I must).

Hey, thanks for that rocketdock comment. I did a little looking up on a whim (totally bored tonight) and saw that it does what Objectdock does, but is totally free. I'm totally replacing OD with it.

Just messing, Malwarebytes is the shight, BTW.

And if you're using combo or rouge fixes you might wanna keep a winsock repair tool on there too.  I found sometimes using them like cleaning with bleach.

Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!
