I recently purchased a Zalman CNPS7700-Cu along with Artic Silver 5. After installing, my computer (processor)ran at about a constant 34C and around 42C at full load. Not Bad...until recently. I know they say to allow a "burn-in" time for the paste, but after about a week, temperatures started rising instead of falling. Now, just sitting here typing this with no other programs running, I'm reading 44C idle and over 53C during gaming. This is insane! I have done nothing, and I mean nothing differently since I installed it about 2 weeks ago. No new programs, no new hardware, no different location. I was wondering if anyone has any idea what is causing this, or if I should try reseating my heathsink and re-pasting it.. or what. I'm really at a loss, but I'm scared to leave my computer on and let the temp go through the roof. Thanks for any help...

reseat the sink maybe? are the screws tight on the mounting bracket?

make sure you have a bios temp guard (I normally set mine at lowest it will go) and you shoudn't have to worry about overheating (or frying)

What chip/mobo are you using? and is your case a desktop or a tower?

is there anything using cpu cycles at idle (some firewalls use insane ammounts of CPU time)

On top of what Tekie said.. check these

When using thermal paste.. it should be applied thinner than a sheet of paper... you should be able to see the processer through it. If you caked it on, it loses its effectiveness.

Secondly.. make sure your case fans are clean, and running at the correct heat to expel the heat built up in the case. A CPU fan is only as good as the fans removing the heat from the case.

Had the same problem once the heat warn would sound as soon as i had games going this happened i think because the screws on the mounting bracket had come loose when it was in transport, tightening the braket and reseating the sink fixed it.

And if all else fails call tech support ya i know it is a pain but is it really worth frying a processor over it.

^^^scratch that... tech support will cost money even if you have a warranty, its void as soon as you replace the stock heatsink with aftermarket or even change paste/pad...

Also is the room your in climate controlled... if not weather, humidity, outside temp... might have a little bit of an effect possibly.
