Hey guys, its been a while since I've done any serious tinkering with my rig and I want to drop in some extra ram as a cheap alternative to completely rebuilding it.
I've currently got a 512MB Stick of some Corsair XMS PC2700. CAS Latency 2, Timings are 2-3-3-6.
What I want to do is drop another 512MB, but I want to do for very cheap. I was looking at Corsair's Value line as an option.
So my question....Will there be any problem in combining the XMS stick with a Value stick? Should I still notice an increase in performance? Keep in mind I won't be running them in dual mode as my MoBo can't deal with that. Thanks for any advice.

you will have to run the ram at the higher timing the new ram can support, but you should notice some performance

so long as the voltage of both sticks is the same, and the PC**** rating is the same, you should not have a problem.

just keep in mind what tekie said, it is only as fast as your slowest part. Still, you should see some additional performance

Thanks for the input. As long as I see some increase in performance, it was money well spent.
Hopefully I'll soon be employed full time and can start funneling away some income to finance a new rig. After 3 years of having the same configuration without updating any hardware, I'm pretty sure I'll see a big difference.
Also, another question. If I make a switch from a P4 1.8ghz (OCed to 2.34) to an Athlon 64 3500+ or a 3800+, what kind of processing performance increase will I see? I understand that 64bit processors don't make much of an impact unless you're running applications that support 64bit.

on the contrary actually, although it's not the 64-bit that's doing it. The Athlon64 architecture is hands down the leader in gaming performance right now. In an evenly clocked P4 vs. AthlonXP vs. Athlon64, the 64 will win 98% of the time with an occaisonal P4 win.
I highly recommend an Athlon64.
