Linksys router..can it -slowly- die?
« on: March 13, 2006, 08:52:08 AM »
Ive had my linksys router for 2 years now. Works fine. Yadda yadda. I moved my webserver from the garage to the upstairs and about 3 months after doing so..noticed that my site was down alot.. (hence the red X avatar..). Reformatted the box. Same problem. Box doesnt go down. Then I noticed that when using my main desktop, AIM would reconnect every few minutes. or Id have some hanging sessions on CS:S and other games last a few seconds.

Could it be the router? I hear linksys sucks...(does it?) and I have the latest firmware version.

Do these things just die? or can it die slowly... as in still work just not as well?

Yes, I have had 3 Linksys Routers die in the past year.  I have found that the harder they are pushed, the more likely they are to fail.

I only buy Netgear or Cisco now for that very reason.

To answer your original question... yes, they can die slowly.

I had a Linksys router doing very simple routing of all incoming port 25 traffic.  One day I noticed that a few emails were not being delivered... the next day, a few more... after about a week.. I noticed that about every 10th email was being "dropped".  I did a hard reset, and it worked fine for an hour.. then started dropping emails again.  I replaced it with a netgear, and the problem was no longer there.

Yep, just jumped into it and I see that it has a nice uptime of 755 hours! I think that was the last power outage (about a month ago)

Should I go with SMC instead? I hear they're good.

I never liked d-link's interfaces... Maybe they have changed, but I never really like them.. SMC.... I am not sure.  If you have a old pc around and don't mind the extra electric you may want to go with monowall... Personaly I go with IP-Cop.

IP cop is another good choice, a lil easier to config IMO, but you loose a LOT of power with it.
