Something to temporarily fix this confusing site.
« on: January 26, 2012, 07:47:22 PM »
topnav - add "Fites 2012 Info"

When we click on that it either takes us to a forum post or a new page with the most up-to-date information on the LAN. Right now we have to hunt for little snipits of info. I didn't even know I could seat myself till I saw a link in some random post. And how about a list of the games to be played, and a schedule.

All of this should be on one page and easily accessible from the fites homepage.

As far as I know the guys are still working on the "Final" schedule. Last I heard it should be up on the site on the 29th. I believe tourneys will be in TF2, MW3, CSS, BF3, UT3, and L4D2. Others are possible though. Now as far as seating and general information, I do not know what to tell you. The registration page has instructions that detail exactly how you go about reserving your seat.

What he said.

We're all (staff) meeting the 28th to finalize tourney rules and schedule. Friday 6pm til Sunday 10am is the party though. Kudrichb is right regarding the tentative line up of games. If you have any questions, please let me know.

I can understand that it's not entirely condensed, but all, or most of this info is on the page where the ticket is purchased.

Quote
Registration, Payment and Seat Selection Process:

-Create/Log in to your FITES forum account.
-Purchase the number of tickets you need in the store.
-Once payment has been received and accepted, you will receive forum private message containing the details of your order, including a code and a link to download your ticket(s) which will be in PDF form. (Tickets will be four to a page.) Your ticket will be REQUIRED to enter the event!
-Go to http://intranet.fites.net and create an account for each seat you have paid for using the code from your purchase. Reuse the same code for each seat. For example if you and 4 friends purchased 5 tickets together give each person the SAME code to register their account.
-Once you have created your account reserve your seat via the "map" link on the top menu bar. Note: You can change your seat for another (given that it's unoccupied) at anytime before the event on the same page.

*Note: Seating is expected to fill up fast, so if you want to guarantee your ability to sit near friends, sign up and pay quickly!

If you have any issues or concerns please reach out to us on the support form or @ support@fites.net!

FAQ:
Q: Why does your new store require registration to the forums?
A: We have found over the past few events that mail has been an issue for distributing registration information. So this is multifaceted.
---We found that emails often got lost or thrown in the junk bin. This system will notify you via a Private Message and by default this will also send you an email to the email account you registered with.
---All your order details are kept under your account and you can retrieve your codes/keys/tickets at any time.

Q: Why do I have to create ANOTHER account for seating?
A: This account is kept on a web server that will be brought to the event and while do our best to provide a basic internet connection for the event we know that sometimes the tubes get clogged. Also, the site is used for not only seat reservation, but allows us to put information here during the event. The schedule and tournament sign up will be on this site as well as hotel menus, game and voice server information and more.

Q:How can I get a discount on my hotel room for this event?
A:Call the hotel front desk (717-697-0321) try to get someone on the  phone that is local to Park Inn.  Then mention FITES (you may have to spell it for them, because in the past they tried looking up "fights") event that is going on from Feb 24th-26th and  that you would like to book a room at the group rate.

And the front page of the intranet site

I'm not asking where this stuff is. I'm telling you how to improve functionality on this site.

Most of it is on ticket purchase page...cool. In-order to get there you have to click, "REGISTER HERE" a new user wants to learn about the event before he clicks big red letters that are telling him/her to register.

Here's another scenario. I'm in my car, pull up the site on my cell phone. What do I click to find the address to this place.

Schedule of events? Tournaments?

How many people have paid and not picked a seat yet. Cause they don't know about the "intranet" site?

How about a sleeping room? Some lans have an area for sleeping bags.

Opening/Closing hours? Some lans close at 2am.

Are you guys providing network cables? chairs?

Will there be security there? Will my kid be safe?

TVs for console games?

Will there be food there?

All of these things should and more should be in one place, easy to get to from the homepage.

It'll take one of you 10 minutes to make this.

I love the "Calendar" on the site too. Great feature.

I'm not asking where this stuff is. I'm telling you how to improve functionality on this site.
And I was trying to help you find this info, because I thought you needed it. Also, I might be reading into your text but it comes off a quite terse and frankly rude.

Most of it is on ticket purchase page...cool. In-order to get there you have to click, "REGISTER HERE" a new user wants to learn about the event before he clicks big red letters that are telling him/her to register.
I guess I could add it to the top bar, but this information exists on the side under "Quick Info" right above our phone number that's VM gets forwarded to all staff and rings my phone directly during the event for those lost or in need something.

Here's another scenario. I'm in my car, pull up the site on my cell phone. What do I click to find the address to this place.

Schedule of events? Tournaments?
I don't know what to say, this is listed in many many places over many years. Perhaps I take for granted how many return attendees we have that come back for the good time we provide.

How many people have paid and not picked a seat yet. Cause they don't know about the "intranet" site?
We cannot force people to read what they have purchased or their confirmation of purchase (receipt.)

How about a sleeping room? Some lans have an area for sleeping bags.
I cannot say everything that isn't I can only say what is.

Opening/Closing hours? Some lans close at 2am.
The times listed are the times the event is open. Should we make a special note that doors don't close?

Are you guys providing network cables? chairs?
This is listed in the things to bring. I should have pointed you that way first. That is my fault. When you have something sitting there for so long but never look at it you tend to forget about it.

Will there be security there? Will my kid be safe?
Security is the staff of FITES. Will your kid be safe? I would hope so, but we are not a sitter service.

TVs for console games?
I don't understand what you are asking for here. If you bring your own console you should have your own display device. Our console room that is provided by Gamestop has all their things.

Will there be food there?
This is also listed on the info page. Food is prohibited by the hotel but beverages are allowed. (No Alcohol) Though there is a bar/restaurant on site and we cannot tell you what to do on your time.

All of these things should and more should be in one place, easy to get to from the homepage.

It'll take one of you 10 minutes to make this.
I am sorry it did/does exist, but I forgot about it. It's been a staple of the site since before I was even a member and through each iteration of the site.

I love the "Calendar" on the site too. Great feature.
This is probably read as being snarky. SMF the software that we current use for the site had it as an option and it was at one point heavily used by a number of people to schedule some gaming time because they had/have jobs with weird hours and wanted to make sure they could get some game time in with friends.

We do these events for fun and charity. And though I do appreciate feedback, taking multiple digs at the site (in the first two posts you make) and in turn the people who volunteer a lot of their time and effort into this, a bit distasteful.

Sure all the info is there if you look for it. But being a new user it's very confusing.

http://2012.lanets.ca/
http://www.thegxl.com/

Look at their top nav. I can find all the important information I'm looking for in the top nav. Everything underneath is sub-text.

I'm just trying to help. This is my profession, it physically hurts me to see a bad UI. My stomach starts turning, my mouth gets dry, I start sweating. Then I turn into a werewolf and dunk on fools in a high school basketball game.

Unlike most other LAN sites, however, we are more than just an annual event. Throughout the year in between our large LAN's we have a pretty active group of people that game together just for fun, we put on smaller informal LAN's just for fun. So if we were nothing more than an informational site to promote and inform about one event (like the two sites you linked to) there wouldn't be so much other stuff on the page and the information would certainly be more focused.

Where you're coming off as hostile is that you have no history on this site, no one knows who you are, what you're credentials are, and you have no rapport with anyone. Before you are able to effectively make your case for what is wrong, you need to make your case for who you are.

This is how I would have started this thread:

Quote
Subject: Looking for more information

Hi guys, I'm looking forward to the LAN in February. I haven't bought my seat yet because I had a few questions and I couldn't find the info for the LAN. [Your questions go here].

I do UI design for a living and maybe I can help with a few design tips to make finding this info a little more intuitive. Here are some of the sites I've designed: Site 1, Site 2, Site 3.  Let me know if I can offer my services and help in anyway.

See you in February!

Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

Seriously...you are coming off quite hostile since these are your first 4 posts on the site.  Maybe instead of making a thread about how you think our site sucks, you could have contacted someone on staff making polite suggestions or offering your 'professional' help on the design of our site.  But the cats out of the bag on how you feel about it....first impressions last the longest.

Welcome to FITES...can't wait to meet you.

ALSO:  The information that you need is on the left sidebar of the front page.  With the exception of the tournaments....which as stated before, have NOT been finalized yet.
That's Mr. Deception to you.
