Keyboard Issues
« on: May 04, 2008, 10:14:32 PM »
I unplugged my keyboard by accident reaching for something in the back this weekend. It is a PS/2 keyboard and I was bummed because I knew I saw going to have to restart. But just for the hell of it I plugged it in anyway, and low and behold it worked. So I didn't worry about it, I installed some stuff and had to do a restart anyway.

I rebooted and find out that the number keys at the top (numbers 2 and 3) are messed up. The alternative functions (i.e. the dollar sign and the at symbol) no longer work the way they should. Instead I get this:

2="
3=£

What do I do know? I have a suggestion, buy a better keyboard.

Are you sure you have the keyboard set as a standard US keyboard in windows?  It may have loaded the wrong   drivers for the keyboard?  That is the only thing I can think of besides getting a new keyboard.

All the other number functions work except those two. And their are not drivers for this particular keyboard, it is "plug and play".

someone just told me at the last lan that you should never ever plug or unplg a keyboard into a ps2 slot when the computer is on.  they told me it can permanetly break the ps2 port.  I never knew it either till then.

Yup, apparently there is some sort of fuse that can be blown, but I would think that would make the port break all together.  Try shutting down, unplug - replugin and boot, then try a different keyboard.  Also try a USB keyboard if you have one.

I think I might just pick up a new one, I have nothing against Sunbeam (the maker of my keyboard). But the G15 is pretty tempting.

But did you try another keyboard to make sure the port isn't bad?  And the g15 is bad ass, and it uses USB.

I have both revisions of the G15. Love it! Used to use http://www.crystalfontz.com/products/635/index.html for my LCD needs.

Well, the G15 is usb, so that won't be a problem... as dwg said, hot swapping anything with the ps/2 is a big no no.  Not sure about fuses, but it will fry the port on the motherboard.  So if you accidently unplug it, if the mouse still works, just shutdown the computer, then plug it back in and start back up.

Also, might be a good idea to check the pins on the connector to make sure none of them got bent or pulled free when you yanked the cord out.

I was wondering if you could get an LCD like that...I may have to get one now.  I love to make new designs with LCD studio.

That would be better if you want to do prettier stuff with LCD Studio.

It is just those two buttons. That is it, so I know it isn't bad, it is just I might as well get another one. Just out of spite to get something different.

Sunbeam? I thought they made toasters?

Try this. Open the control panel, then the Regional and Language Options. Go to the Languages tab, then click the details button under "Text Services and input languages". Make sure your default input language is set to "English (United States) - US". If it's not select it from the drop down list. If you don't see it in the drop down list, add it using the "Add" button in the "Installed Services" area.

It sounds like you've got things set to the UK keyboard layout.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

Update:

Sully I tried that and you are right.

Bought a Logitech G15 tonight, couldn't be happier. I installed it and it gave me the same issues as the last one. I tried sully's method of fixing it and it worked great. I thank you sully.

I take that back I did what you said and it still gave me Crap. So what I did was completely got rid of the UK layout and just selected US and then US again. Now it works, because if it wasn't I was going to be so pissed.
