iTouch/iPhone 3.0 software
« on: June 22, 2009, 12:38:19 PM »
So, all the users of the iPhone get the 3.0 software upgrade for free, but users of the iTouch have to pay $10 for it.  Not for long:

http://www.blogsdna.com/3706/how-to-update-ipod-touch-to-30-firmware-for-free.htm

I have read from several sources that this is not the 'preview' 3.0 software, this is actually the released software.

Will this be a fresh 3.0 install or an upgrade that migrates my settings/apps?

From the looks of the comments and the instructions it looks as if this is a backup file of an updated iTouch with the new software.  So it will wipe your settings and files and replace them with what is in the backup file.  Unless you can do a backup of just the settings and merge that with the complete backup you are using to install the new OS.
Never, but never question the engineers judgement.

Well, someone posted this in the comments as well:

Quote
Ok guys. I did 2nd Gen to 3.0 and I did it without losing any of my ipod files. I can only say this works for 2ND GEN ITOUCH TO 3.0 FINAL RELEASE. Here is what I did:
1. Download the 2nd gen 3.0 ispw file.
2. load up itunes.
3. plug in your itouch.
4. it will show up in your itunes. now on the main screen for it, there will be 2 options: “check for update” and “restore”
5. click on “check for update”. it will take you to the page where it says the features and says “buy for 9.99″ or “cancel”.
6. press the cancel button.
7. now it will return to the main page you were at, except this time it will say “update” instead of “check for update”
8. hold your shift key and left click “update”
9. double click the 3.0 file you downloaded.
10. let it run its course like normal.

wallah, you won’t have lost any files cuz it will treat it as an update and not a restore, and you will have a functioning 3.0 update. good luck folks.

Besides, can't you just backup you current apps and other settings *before* you upgrade?

It seems that if you do the "Hold Shift and Click UPDATE instead of RESTORE" thing, that should upgrade without restoring.  make sure you have iTunes 8.2!

Just to let you know:  I updated my Gen1 ipod touch 16gb to software 3.0.  A few caveats though....make sure you update itunes to 8.2 or it will not work and will be forced to restore your ipod.  Also make sure you back it up before you attempt this.  I tried to update and restore using the files in itunes 8.1.xxx and it failed twice until I realized that itunes needed to be updated.  After restoring to the original 2.2.1 software, it automatically restored from the backup.  After that, you just hold Shift and click update, find the appropriate file for your ipod and it updates just fine - saving all your settings as well!

Do you have a copy of the firmware handy? Its not available via the original link and I don't want to get a ...corrupted copy.

Use the iPod Touch 1G 3.0/7A341 for your gen1 or iPod Touch 2G 3.0/7A341 for gen2.  When the file DL's, rename the extension from .zip to .ipsw.

Push Apps? I am not sure on the iPod... I know on the iPhone it updated a ton.

For the ITouch, it'll push apps when it's got a wifi signal.
