Issues with DDWRT and a Netgear WGE101 wireless bridge.
« on: February 28, 2008, 05:13:39 PM »
 :headscratch:

Ever since I installed the DDWRT firmware on my WRT54GS everything has been working wonderfully - except my Xbox Live Access.  It seems to log me in for a bit - it will tell me if there are people online.  But it will just sit there at the 'spinning circle of dots'.  After about 5 minutes, it will just drop me to the 360 'desktop' signed out of Live.  This has never happened before the installation of the new firmware.  I know that wireless bridges are supposed to be transparent to the AP, so there are no settings to change for the bridge itself other than the IP, SSID and gateway.  I also made sure that the appropriate ports are being forwarded to the Xbox's IP, which were also on the old WRT54GS firmware.  Has anyone heard of any incompatibilities with other brands of wireless bridges?  I have scoured the net and onl found how to make another wrt54gs with the DDWRT firmware act as a wireless bridge, which doesn't help since I don't have another one.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
That's Mr. Deception to you.

Have you tried putting the XBox in the DMZ? Anytime somone has asked me about problems with their XBox and a router was involved, that usually took care of the problem. I suspect perhaps the UPnP that typically handles the XBL port mappings is flaking out. My Windows Home Server has trouble maintaining it's UPnP port mappings so I had to enter them manually. This may be the same thing.
Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!

yeah check and make sure uPnP port is enabled (it's disabled as default on first installation)

Also DMZ'ing the ip would eliminate the issue of the xbox unable to communicate with the network. Also check timeout settings if its connecting wireless and firewall settings (maybe disable firewall and see if that was conflicting)

I don't need to set the Xbox in the DMZ (which I tried before when it would take a long time to log in and it didn't make a difference) due to me forwarding the proper ports - which made Live log in damn quick.  And I don't like using UPnP - never seemed to work properly for me.

Actually, I did manage to resolve the issue and I think it is a bug in the DDWRT firmware (which I will report).  I initially had the bridge hold a static IP, and it would connect to the WLAN and I could access it and everything.  But it never showed up as a wireless client in the DDWRT.  Well, I figure I'd try a shot in the dark and set the bridge to get an address from the DHCP.  After that, Xbox live logged in in a mere 30 seconds or less and it showed up as a wireless client.  This HAS to be a problem with the new firmware.

If you want to still have a static IP for your Xbox but need to use DHCP to get around this, you can set an IP reservation in the DHCP setup. If you look under the Services tab (and the services sub-tab), you can set static leases. You'll just need to know the MAC address of your Xbox.

Well, the 360 still has the static IP, which wasn't the issue.  It was the bridge that had the static IP issue.  Setting the bridge to get it's IP from DHCP was the workaround.  It's just odd though.  I had this setup exactly the same with the original firmware and never had an issue.  Whatever, as long as it works, I am happy.
