Title: inaccessible folder
Post by: AngryHostage on November 01, 2004, 03:10:12 PM
hiyas.

recently I reinstalled xp overtop of another installion of xp. everything went ducky peachy keen except for one thing - I had my document folders marked as private. now I can't do anything with the folder, and I really wanted to get a few things out it before I fragged it in DOS mode.

Every time I try to access the folder I get access is denied.

Anyone know how I can bust back in there?

yeah, that'll be the easiest way ... go download overclockix, it's got NTFS filesystem support rolled into the kernel.

The problem you're having is that in the OLD install of XP, you prolly told it "make my docs private" ... which does a one way encryption of the directory and all subdirs ... withotu the original install with eth keys and registry entry to decrypt it ... it's a P.I.T.A to crack it

knoppix live CD's ignore it tho, and allow access to the files.

Okay, now for the next part. I've copied what was needed from that private folder. now I need to delete it and free up 2 gigs on my hard drive. Knoppix wont let me do this. I tried to reset the permissions for the folder using knoppix but to no avail.

Any other suggestions?

Will that delete the folder i need to get rid off so I have enough room for the documents I need to make for the CS tourney organization? I think not. Come on Pride, aint you got anything over there that will let me boot to a CD and frag that folder?

get a windows boot disk. Boot from it and at the command prompt type:

Code: [Select]
format c: /Y

That will solve all your problems
