At some point during the LAN, I lost my CoD4 CD. Thankfully, I can go in to the game and view my CD key. I've already copied it down for reference. Yes yes. Its a legit store-bought copy.
I don't play the single player so I don't need the CD to play but if I ever have to reinstall winblows, I would like to reinstall CoD4 too. So what are my options? I'd rather not spend $50 on another CD.
Can I...
- download a copy..but as long as I use my legit key, it`ll all be fine? Punkbuster won't freak out?
- enter the key in to steam and let steam manage the game? (will i retain my lvl 55 when doing so?)
- ..something I`m missing?
Thaaaaaaaanks.

Option 1 will work. As long as you have a legit key punkbuster should not go crazy.
Option 2 will also work, as long as you transfer over your profile to the game. Just copy over your profile and put it back in just as you normally would.
-
Yeah, as long as you have a legit key, yer golden....and not in the shower sense.

Woot. Okay. I think I`ll go the Steam option. Unless anyone has heard of problems running CoD4 with Steam.

I love our water vapor overlords!

Unless you purchased CoD4 through Steam, you cant use it to download the game. I even tried using my retail cd-key to add the game to Steam and it doesn't work. After looking it up on the boards, there are a few games you can add with retail cd-keys, but CoD4 is not one of them.

If you want, I have a 'backup' of my cd that I can 'lend' you. Technically, it's completely legal since you actually purchased and own the game.

He can also legally torrent a copy of the game off the internet and use that. Thankfully you only need the CD for single player. I wish more game manufacturers would use a setup like that. Multiplayer is so nice to not worry about putting the CD in the drive.
-
As long as getting a torrented copy won't set off punkbuster alarms. I would assume the files on that and the disc would be the same. And the key is legit so it shouldn't matter..right?
-
You can find a torrent of an ISO of the COD4 disk. You burn that to a CD or DVD (depending on which version you download) and your computer will see it as a retail COD4 disk. Most times the download copies aren't pre-modified to allow the game to work. They leave that up to the downloader to do.

Eh I`ll just mount it if needed. Thanky foos.

I think your best option to call Jeff considering he borrowed it from you to play the single player campaign when that weekend.
-
uhm... hmm. I know he had it at the lan to install the game. He had his own legit key but no CD so he used my disc. I remember him giving it back to me but that's it. I've left a voice mail with him. ha

Jeff stated he doesn't have it but that he`ll look around. Either way, my torrent finished last night of the game dvd so I'm good to go.
