How CPU intensive are game servers?
« on: September 07, 2009, 08:23:00 AM »
My question really boils down to the fact I just build an atom 330 based server.  It will act as a NAS, HTPC, Torrent box, console emulator.  I was wondering if I could throw game server into the list.  The CPU I imagine should be roughly as powerful as a P4 2.5-3GHz, is this enough power to host a decent game server?  It will have 4GB of ram and a 20/20Mb internet connection if that comes into play.

Should be plenty for most game servers if you only run one... Maybe even two instances since you have the RAM. I think now some of the steam games are really relying on disk speed for loading the next level/map.

Well disk speed is going to be insane (You could say storage is my specialty), I designed this to be a fast 8TB+ NAS (iSCSI target too) and then threw in HTPC duties.  I guess the only way to know is to stress test it.

2.4 is plenty of power to host a single server especially with 4GB of memory to back it up. Upload speeds are the biggy though when it comes to hosting a big time server (20-40 tix). Even with a norm 7200 RPM WD HD though I was loading BF2 maps in about 7 sec and my CS Gungame server seems to load up maps pretty quick as well. You should have no problems putting up a good server with those stats. Like Mark, if you need any help throw me a PM
