HELP - Deciding New Rig
« on: July 20, 2007, 09:24:10 AM »
K,

So I'm trying to decide what new rig I should go with since I sold my 939. My options would be going a m2n sli deluxe mobo with a x2 4000 brisbane and 2gb of crucial ballistix ddr2 mem or...

A gigabyte Ga n650 ds4 mobo with a E4400 and 1gb of Corsair XMS Memory. I'm sorta torn right now on what I should get. I'm a big OC fan and am worried that if I go the AM2 route, I won't get the results  I want (was looking to go past the 3ghz mark, so with the 4000 or the 3600, I should be able to reach that)

On the other hand, the E4400s (though not b2 stepping like conroe) can OC to 3.5 easily (would go with the E6320 if I had more green but its max OC is around 3.8 so I don't see the reason to spend more)

Anyways, I'm sorta in the classical debate of AMD vs Intel. I've been an AMD fan my entire life. I've never used any other processor other than AMD for my builds. However, it's difficult to pass up an intel chipset that has the capabilities of going to 3.4ghz for only 130 bucks. So anyone who'd wanna help me out in my ongoing in head debate, please feel free to place your input. It's much appreciated

First, don't be a fan boy to be a fan boy.  My 4000+ was the first AMD chip I ever purchased.  Was very solid.

Right now Intel is leading in the processor wars.  Buy what you can afford that is the best.  ATM, if I were to buy it would either be a Core2Duo or Quadcore.

Go with the best bang for the buck; Balance the price with the power and suspected longevity of the product. Or at least that's what I'd do. I'd go with Intel now if I had the choice.

Thanks Cuzz...Thats what I decided to do then. I bought an Core 2 E4400 and a MSI P6N mobo (was going to go with the Asus P5 but the reviews were mixed vs the MSI which is supposable better and more stable for OC'ing)

Like you said, I decided to go with Intel C2D because they're far out in front right now in the processor wars. A E4400 at 2.0 stock can reach speeds of 3.6 or higher with decent cooling (they hit there FSB wall of 375 at multi of 10x which limits them)

With a amd cpu, I just wouldn't see close to that type of performance (3.2 was the most I saw from the brisbane line cpu's but not stable...3.13 stable)

Thanks for your help...I decided to go with the setup thats going to offer me the best perfomance vs the price (for anyone who doesn't know...the E4400 is a 2 ghz intel core 2 duo codename allendale. The only difference between the E4400 and the E6320 is that the 6300 series is offering the 4mb cache vs allendale which is only 2mb. However, from every bench I've read, the difference in cache only reflects a 2-4% performance difference between the 2 series and Allendale is significantly cheaper. If someone is looking for a budget PC and not looking to spend 200 for a E6300 or 6600 series, truly consider allendale as a alternative. ClubIT have them going for 120 bucks and they crush 6600's stock for half the cost. Just something to look into)

And funny thing Kona, the only dif between ur rig and the one I'm building is the Mobo. I wasn't sure about how XFX and EVGA mobo's would hold up. That and it requires fans to cool NB and such. Last mobo i had (Gigabyte K8N) burned up the NB because my 8800 blocked it. Whats ur 3D benches on that setup?

Hey, another quick question for ya then. First, whats your OCZ memory clocked at and what timings are u setup (Standard for OCZ is 4-4-4-15 although I know u can go 4-4-4-12 with a slight .5 overvolt....Also I heard u can go 5-5-5-15 at 1000mhz ddr2 speeds though i think having tighter timings would be better than faster speeds since you most likely won't be using 1000mhz speeds) Also, are u using 10x multi and how did you OC the rig? is it 1:1 with mem and cpu FSB linked or unlinked. I haven't had much experience with OC'ing Intel processors before so anything you can offer on how u got there as far as settings, timings and voltage would be helpful. Got my E4400 in today, but waiting for my Mobo tomorrow. And I went with Gigabyte G650i At the last moment. All solid capacitors and one of the very select few Intel boards that can successfully go past 500 FSB and still remain stable.

Well everything is installed and working...I have it going at 3.5 at ddr 933. Who would of thought u could do a Aquamark 3 bench of over 160k and superpi in under 17s. Anyways, I'm still in the middle of testing to see if it's stable. Right now the mem is over volted by .1 and cpu is at 1.485. I think I may be able to back it down a little since I boosted my HT and NB volts to .20 to gain stability. Anyways, let me know what u guys think..I'll run a 3dMark here soon

My feeling with Intel vs. AMD was always such that I'd go with Intel if I could afford the opportunity to upgrade to a very high-end quad-core. Otherwise, it's always better to be with the devil you know than the devil you don't, so I'd stay with AMD. To me, the price always seems right when I'm shopping around.

As far as over-clocking, I haven't felt inspired to push my 6000+ since it already delivers the performance I'm looking for, and I haven't pushed a CPU in a while, so I'd like to refresh my expertise on this first.
