I have had Verizon DSL for a number of years now. Lately my modem would lock up and reboot itself when I would start doing large sustained downloads (even online COD4 triggered it on Saturday). After calling Tech support and going through a bunch of crap with them they finally said I needed a new modem but since mine was out of warranty I would have to buy one. Luckily my ex-mother in law had an old one that I thought might still work. I put it in and while it did work it showed the exact same behavior. In the end I flashed the firmware of the modem and now it is working correctly. If anyone else notices this behavior and needs the new firmware I can provide a link to it.

Verizon tried to pull the same crap with me. I was with them as a DSL customer for almost 7 years before I switched to Comcast last year. When we moved to our new house I kept having connection problems (restarting) with the modem I had gotten when first becoming a customer. After several failed attempts trying to get it to stay online for the majority of the time they finally just told me I needed a new modem, which of course I had to pay out of my own pocket (a big screw you to a long time customer IMO). Well, $40 and about a week later I had it...and still had the exact same problems. 2-3 months later I switched to Comcast and have not had any real problems since.
F U Verizon!

FYI to add to this...if your Comcast modem craps out, Comcast gives you a new one for the whopping total of.....are you ready for this? NOTHING!

I know this cause it happened to me! Comcast has been REALLY good to me. Even with all the bad press they haven't messed with me once... When the send a tech they usually listen to me... I guess cause the wiring and network setup in my house intimidates them. lol. Owning your own home and wiring it yourself gets some respect from contractors.

That's because you are just renting/leasing a modem from Comcast.

Comcast speeds through their networks and modems are already capable of 50mb/s. They're just waiting to see what Verizon is doing.

Hell, I don't even need anything faster than 5/2. I'm pretty content with it overall.
